Late June through August is the prime window, when lake water warms for swimming and all campground loops are fully open. July typically offers the warmest weather but also the heaviest weekend demand, so reservations are strongly recommended. Early June and September are good shoulder options for RV travelers who want cooler nights, fewer mosquitoes, and easier site selection. Winter visitation is limited to day use and groomed trail activities, as most camping services shut down after the fall season.

The park's signature sandy beach on Sturgeon Lake is one of the finest in northern Minnesota. Shallow, gradually deepening water makes it a family favorite, and a day-use parking lot handles tow vehicles after unhitching at camp.
A wooded loop hike takes visitors around small Pickerel Lake through mature pine forest. The trail is mostly level and suitable for casual hikers staying in the campground.
The park serves as an access point for the long-distance Taconite State Trail, which runs between Grand Rapids and Ely. Day hikers and cyclists can sample scenic forest sections directly from the park.
Both lakes support populations of walleye, northern pike, bass, and panfish. A public boat launch and fishing pier make it straightforward for RV travelers to fish from shore or water.
Calm waters and connected lake systems invite canoe and kayak exploration. Rentals are not guaranteed on site, so visitors should plan to bring their own boats.
The mixed forest and lake shoreline support deer, loons, bald eagles, and migratory songbirds. Dawn and dusk near the lakeshore are especially productive viewing times.
In winter the park grooms trails for cross-country skiing and offers snowmobile connections to the Taconite State Trail. RV camping is closed in winter, so this is a day-use activity.
Camper was delivered and set up on site when we got there. It was clean and everything worked, would definitely rent this one again. Ashley was a great host.

McCarthy Beach State Park, MN, United States
The park is reached via County Road 5 from Side Lake, roughly 18 miles north of Hibbing and about 35 miles northwest of Virginia, Minnesota. From the Twin Cities, drivers typically take I-35 north to Highway 169, a route of roughly 200 miles and a 3.5 to 4 hour drive. The approach is on paved rural highways without mountain passes or tunnel restrictions, but RV drivers should watch for frost heaves in spring and slow down on narrow county roads near the park entrance. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Duluth International Airport, about 75 miles southeast, with Minneapolis-St. Paul International the larger long-haul option.
