Fall, from late September through November, brings cooler weather, lower humidity, and smaller crowds, making it ideal for RV travel. Summer is hot with highs often above 95 F, though the lake provides welcome relief for swimmers and paddlers. Things to do at Meridian State Park

  • Bosque Hiking Trail Loop Moderate
    RV parking available

The Bosque Hiking Trail is a roughly 2.3-mile loop that circles Lake Meridian and passes through juniper-oak woodland. Expect rocky footing, several overlooks of the lake, and solid chances of spotting songbirds.

  • Lake Meridian Fishing and Paddling
    RV parking available

Lake Meridian is a 72-acre reservoir open to fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, channel catfish, and sunfish. A fishing pier, canoe and kayak launch, and small boat ramp serve paddlers and bank anglers, and a Texas fishing license is not required to fish from shore inside the park.

  • Shoreline Swimming Area Easy
    RV parking available

A designated swimming area on the lake provides a cool break during hot Texas summers. There are no lifeguards, and swimmers enter at their own risk.

  • Golden-Cheeked Warbler Birding

Meridian State Park is one of the most accessible public sites in Texas to see the endangered golden-cheeked warbler, which nests only in central Texas Ashe juniper woodlands. Spring mornings from March through May offer the best viewing, especially along the Shinnery Ridge interpretive trail.

  • Shinnery Ridge Interpretive Trail Easy
    RV parking available

This short interpretive loop showcases the park's signature shin oak and juniper habitat. Signs explain the park's ecology and the warbler's nesting requirements.

  • Little Forest Junior Trail Easy
    RV parking available

A short, family-friendly trail designed for younger hikers near the campground area. It works well as a short leg-stretcher before or after a longer paddle on the lake.

  • CCC Refectory and Historic Structures
    RV parking available

The park's rustic stone refectory, culverts, and dam were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and remain the architectural centerpiece of the park. The refectory area is a popular picnic and photo stop.

  • Wildlife Viewing and Stargazing

White-tailed deer, armadillos, wild turkeys, and numerous songbirds are common throughout the park. With low light pollution from nearby Meridian, clear nights offer strong stargazing from open areas near the campground.

How to get to Meridian State Park

Meridian State Park lies off State Highway 22, about four miles southwest of the town of Meridian. From Waco it is roughly 55 miles north, about a one-hour drive, and from Fort Worth it is about 70 miles south, roughly 90 minutes via US-67 and SH-144. RV routes through Bosque County use two-lane state highways with rolling hills and a few narrow bridges, so drivers of longer rigs should plan fuel and turnarounds in advance. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Waco Regional Airport, with Dallas Fort Worth International Airport about two hours to the northeast.
