Late May through early September is the prime window for RV travel, when daytime highs are warm, the swim beach is active, and all campground loops and boat ramps are open. July and early August bring the warmest lake temperatures but also the largest weekend crowds, so reservations should be made well in advance. Shoulder months like September and early October offer quieter sites, cooler nights ideal for campfires, and excellent fall bird migration viewing. Winters on the eastern South Dakota prairie are cold and windy, so off-season RV visits require cold-weather preparation and limited services.

Fishing is the signature activity at Oakwood Lakes, with the eight-lake chain supporting walleye, northern pike, perch, and panfish. Several shore access points and a boat ramp sit within easy walking distance of the main campground, and ice fishing is popular in winter.
The park maintains a sandy swim beach on East Oakwood Lake with picnic shelters and restrooms nearby. It is the central gathering spot on warm summer days and is a short drive from RV loops.
The Tetonkaha Trail is a multi-use path that loops through prairie and lakeshore habitat within the park. It offers flat, family-friendly walking and interpretive signs about the area's natural and cultural history.
The interconnected lakes are ideal for powerboating, kayaking, and canoeing, with a public boat ramp near the main campground. Calm mornings on the smaller lakes are especially good for paddlers.
An original pioneer-era cabin preserved within the park highlights the area's 19th-century homesteading history. It makes for a short, educational stop between lake activities.
The mix of prairie, wetlands, and lake habitat supports waterfowl, pelicans, deer, and migratory songbirds. Spring and fall migrations bring some of the best viewing of the year.
Multiple picnic areas with shelters, grills, and restrooms are distributed around the shoreline. Several are reservable for groups and have large-vehicle pull-through parking.

The park sits west of Interstate 29 in eastern South Dakota, with access via SD Highway 30 and county roads near the town of Bruce. Brookings is about a 25 to 30 minute drive southeast, Watertown is roughly 45 minutes north, and Sioux Falls is around 90 minutes to the south. Roads into the park are paved prairie two-lanes with no tunnels, mountain passes, or significant grades, making it a straightforward approach for large RVs and trailers, though side winds on the open plains can be strong. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD), with Brookings Regional Airport offering general aviation service closer to the park.
