Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, is the most popular window, with warm lake temperatures for swimming, boating, and fishing. Summer days are hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms possible, so early June and September often offer the best balance of open water, fewer crowds, and milder evenings. Spring brings crappie and white bass runs that draw anglers, while fall delivers cool nights, changing foliage, and quiet campgrounds. Winter camping is possible at limited sites, but facilities and water service may be reduced.
Cold winter; limited services, some campground loops closed
Reduced winter services, water systems may be off
Campgrounds begin seasonal openings; spring winds common
Full services resume; watch for severe thunderstorms
Peak severe weather season; monitor tornado watches
Busy lake season; reserve early for holiday weekends
Peak season, hot and humid; A/C recommended
Continued peak use; water temperatures at their warmest
Shoulder season; pleasant weather, fewer crowds
Fall colors and quiet campgrounds
Hunting season in adjacent wildlife areas; reduced services begin
Winter camping at limited sites; water systems typically off
Pomona Reservoir is a 4,000-acre Army Corps of Engineers lake that supports powerboating, waterskiing, wakeboarding, and personal watercraft use. The park offers multiple boat ramps and a full-service marina on the north shore. Trailer parking is available near each ramp, with room for tow vehicles.
Pomona is a popular Kansas fishery known for crappie, white bass, walleye, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. Shoreline access, fishing jetties, and boat-in structure make it productive year-round for anglers. RV-accessible parking is available at several designated fishing areas.
A designated swim beach provides sandy shoreline access to the reservoir during the warm season. Nearby day-use areas include picnic tables, shelters, and restrooms. Paved parking accommodates tow vehicles after detaching trailers at the campground.
The Witches Broom Nature Trail is a short interpretive hiking loop winding through woodlands and prairie near the campgrounds. It offers wildlife viewing opportunities including deer, turkey, and songbirds. The trailhead has limited parking suited to tow vehicles rather than large motorhomes.
Deer Run is a longer multi-use trail system for hiking and mountain biking through rolling wooded terrain within the park. The trail links several camping areas and day-use points around the north shore. Difficulty is moderate due to rolling hills and natural surface conditions.
The adjacent Pomona Wildlife Area offers thousands of acres of grassland and timber habitat for wildlife viewing and seasonal hunting. Visitors can spot deer, waterfowl, turkeys, and a range of songbirds from parking pullouts and access roads. Respect posted hunting seasons when planning visits.
Multiple day-use areas around the park include covered picnic shelters, grills, playgrounds, and open shoreline lawns. These areas make convenient stops for lunch or afternoon breaks between activities. Large paved parking lots can accommodate RVs at several shelter locations.
