Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, is the most popular window thanks to warm temperatures, open swimming and boat rental facilities, and full campground services. Summer weekends and holidays draw crowds, so midweek stays offer a quieter experience. Shoulder months in April and October are excellent for RVers seeking cooler weather, fall color, and easier campsite availability. Winter visits are possible but expect reduced services and limited campground loops.

Shakamak's three lakes total around 400 acres and are stocked for largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, and crappie. RV anglers will find paved parking near the boat ramps and fishing piers. A valid Indiana fishing license is required.
The park's seasonal aquatic center features a large swimming pool, kiddie pool, and waterslide, typically open from Memorial Day weekend through mid-August. It is one of the most popular summer attractions in the park and is within an easy walk or short drive of the campground.
Rental rowboats, paddleboats, and kayaks are available in season at the boat rental on Lake Shakamak. Only electric trolling motors are permitted on the lakes, keeping the water quiet for paddlers and anglers.
Trail 1 is an easy lakeside walking path that loops near the campground, family cabins, and Lake Shakamak shoreline. It is one of the most accessible trails in the park, suitable for families and casual hikers.
Trail 2 winds through mature hardwood forest with rolling terrain and wildflower-rich understory. It offers a moderate workout and good birdwatching opportunities, with a trailhead reachable from main park parking areas.
The Shakamak saddle barn offers guided horseback rides on dedicated bridle trails through the park's woodlands during the warm-weather season. Rides are first-come, first-served and a popular family activity for RV campers.
Beyond the aquatic center, the park has shaded picnic areas, shelters, and grassy lakeshore spots ideal for a quiet afternoon. Several picnic areas have nearby pull-through parking that can accommodate larger vehicles.
Shakamak's mix of lakes, wetlands, and hardwood forest supports waterfowl, herons, woodpeckers, white-tailed deer, and seasonal songbirds. Quiet trails and lake overlooks are good observation points, especially early morning and at dusk.

Shakamak State Park, IN, United States
Shakamak State Park is reached via State Road 48 just west of Jasonville, in southwestern Indiana. From Terre Haute it is roughly a 35 to 45 minute drive south, from Bloomington about 1 hour and 15 minutes west, and from Indianapolis around 1 hour and 45 minutes southwest. Roads in are generally flat to gently rolling Midwestern highways with no major mountain passes or tunnels, but RVers should watch for narrow rural two-lane sections and a few low-clearance railroad underpasses on local routes. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Indianapolis International Airport (IND).
