South Beach is a wide, flat sand beach stretching south from the Yaquina Bay south jetty. It is ideal for walking, beachcombing, flying kites, and watching winter storms, with paved trails and boardwalks leading from the campground and day-use lots.
The south jetty offers rock fishing, crabbing, and views of boats entering Yaquina Bay. A short drive from the campground leads to a large paved lot suitable for RVs and tow vehicles.
Cooper Ridge Nature Trail is a loop hike through shore-pine forest and stabilized dunes within the park. The gently rolling route is a good option for stretching legs near the campground.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium sits just north of the park near the south end of the Yaquina Bay Bridge. Exhibits feature sea otters, sharks, seabirds, and Pacific Northwest marine habitats, with ample bus and RV parking on site.
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is a historic wooden lighthouse overlooking the bay entrance, a short drive north of the park. Visitors can tour the keeper's quarters and enjoy panoramic views of the coastline.
Yaquina Head offers tidepool exploration and Oregon's tallest lighthouse. Spring brings thousands of nesting common murres, cormorants, and gulls to the bluffs and offshore rocks, with eagles and falcons often visible hunting near the lighthouse. Yaquina Bay offers protected paddling with views of Newport's working waterfront. Launches are available in Newport, and rentals can be arranged in town before heading back to camp.
The central Oregon Coast is a prime location for gray whale viewing from shore. South Beach State Park sits on US Highway 101 about 2 miles south of Newport, Oregon, just across the Yaquina Bay Bridge. From Portland the drive is roughly 135 miles (about 2.5 to 3 hours) via OR-99W and US-20, and from Eugene it is about 90 miles (2 hours) via OR-34 or US-20 through the Coast Range. RV drivers should expect winding, two-lane mountain sections with grades on US-20 and OR-34, and strong crosswinds on the Yaquina Bay Bridge. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Eugene (EUG) and Portland (PDX).
