The park's day-use beach offers a long, sandy swimming area on the south shore of Higgins Lake. The shallow, gradual entry and unusually clear water make it popular with families. Dedicated day-use parking accommodates tow vehicles after disconnecting from RVs at the campsite.
The Marl Lake unit across CR-104 features a multi-loop hiking and mountain biking trail of roughly 6 miles around a quiet, undeveloped lake. The terrain is mostly level with soft forest footing, and interpretive signs highlight wetland habitat. A separate trailhead parking area on the Marl Lake side provides room for tow vehicles.
The park operates a boat launch with access to Higgins Lake, one of the largest and deepest inland lakes in Michigan. The lake supports powerboating, sailing, paddleboarding, and kayaking in its clear waters. Trailer parking is available near the launch.
Higgins Lake is known for lake trout, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, perch, and whitefish, while Marl Lake offers quiet panfish and pike water. The park provides a boat launch and a fish-cleaning station. Michigan fishing licenses are required.
Roads around Higgins Lake offer a scenic cycling loop of roughly 20 miles with wide shoulders and lakeside views. Riders can start from the park and circle back via CR-100 and Old US-27. Traffic is light outside peak summer weekends.
Hartwick Pines, about 30 minutes north near Grayling, protects one of Michigan's last old-growth white pine stands. The park includes an interpretive center, a logging museum, and easy walking trails through towering pines. Large day-use lots accommodate tow vehicles and small RVs.
Marl Lake is a shallow, no-wake lake ideal for kayaks and canoes. Paddlers can explore marshy shorelines rich in birdlife including herons, loons, and waterfowl. A carry-down access point is located at the Marl Lake trailhead.
Tori and Dalton were so wonderful to work with! The camper was extremely clean and had everything in it that we needed. This was my first experience renting a camper and would recommend working with them to anyone! Thanks again, you two!
