July and August offer the warmest lake temperatures and the most reliable weather for swimming, waterskiing, and windsurfing, which are the park's signature activities. June and September are excellent shoulder-season choices for RV travel, with lighter traffic on Highway 4 and cooler, drier conditions for hiking the short trails. Late spring and early fall can bring wet Pacific systems to central Vancouver Island, so RVers should plan for rain gear and check BC Parks reservation availability before arrival.

The lower day-use area features a warm freshwater beach that is one of the most popular swimming spots on central Vancouver Island. There are no lifeguards on duty, so visitors swim at their own risk. bcparks.ca/sproat-lake-park/
A short half-kilometre trail from the main day-use parking lot follows the lakeshore to a small pier where visitors can view K'ak'awin, one of the finest panels of prehistoric petroglyphs in British Columbia. The rock carving is easily reached and suitable for most visitors. bcparks.ca/sproat-lake-park/
Waterskiing is a popular activity on Sproat Lake, with a boat launch located near the day-use area. The long, sheltered lake provides ideal conditions for towed watersports. bcparks.ca/sproat-lake-park/
When the wind is up, Sproat Lake offers excellent windsurfing conditions. The open stretches of the lake generate consistent afternoon breezes during summer. bcparks.ca/sproat-lake-park/
Canoeing and kayaking opportunities exist throughout the park, with paddlers able to launch at the boat launch or at any accessible point along the lake. The protected shoreline is well suited to beginner and intermediate paddlers. bcparks.ca/sproat-lake-park/
Sproat Lake offers freshwater fishing for cutthroat trout and other species, subject to provincial and federal regulations. Anglers must hold a valid British Columbia fishing licence. bcparks.ca/sproat-lake-park/
Sproat Lake is one of the few Vancouver Island provincial parks that offers freshwater scuba diving opportunities. Divers typically enter from the day-use area shoreline. bcparks.ca/sproat-lake-park/
Just east of Sproat Lake on Highway 4, Cathedral Grove protects a stand of towering old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar. The short loop trails are accessible from the highway, though RV parking is tight and caution is advised on the narrow road.

We loved our trip up Vancouver Island, and across to Quadra and Cortes islands too. Having an RV , along with our bikes (we brought our hitch bike rack), meant we had a lot of flexibility. Our little dogs had a blast too. At the pickup, Jessica explained how everything worked, and urged us to reach out with any questions during our trip. When we did have a question, she was very quick to respond. Returning the RV was also very easy, and Jessica was flexible with the time. She appreciated that we returned the RV clean. Would absolutely recommend Jessica and her RV to anyone considering a trip on Vancouver Island.

Great hosts. Friendly and responsive. Trailer was exactly as described and had everything we needed for our 5 night stay. The king bed was comfy, my kids complained a bit about the bunk mattresses, they were a little thin.

Sproat Lake Provincial Park, BC, Canada
The park is located on Highway 4, about 13 km northwest of Port Alberni and roughly 15 minutes west of town. From Nanaimo it is approximately 95 km (about 1 hour 30 minutes) west on Highway 19 and Highway 4; from Tofino it is roughly 115 km (about 2 hours) east on Highway 4. RVers should be aware that Highway 4 west of Port Alberni climbs over Sutton Pass and includes narrow, winding sections through Cathedral Grove, so drivers of longer rigs should travel slowly and use pullouts. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips is Nanaimo Airport (YCD), with Victoria International (YYJ) and Vancouver International (YVR) as larger options.
