Late spring through early fall, roughly May to September, offers the warmest, driest weather and full Heritage Village programming with costumed interpreters and pioneer demonstrations. July is peak season, especially around Pioneer Day on July 24, when crowds and temperatures both run high. Shoulder months like April, May, and October bring mild days, lighter crowds, and easier parking for larger RVs. Winter visits are quieter and focused on special holiday events, with some village buildings and outdoor activities on a reduced schedule.
Cold and snowy; reduced village programming, holiday events only
Winter conditions continue; limited outdoor activities
Spring weather variable; occasional snow still possible
Pleasant shoulder season; full village opening typically resumes
Mild and green, excellent for RV travel
Warm and dry, sun protection advised
Peak season; large Pioneer Day crowds around July 24
Hot afternoons, early starts recommended
Cooler, drier, and less crowded
Fall colors in the surrounding foothills
Cooler; programming winds down toward winter schedule
Cold and snowy; special Candlelight Christmas events on select evenings
The This Is the Place Monument is a 60-foot-high memorial with bronze figures of Brigham Young and other early church leaders, anchoring a walking path of sculptures. Bas-reliefs around the base depict significant figures in Utah history, and the adjacent Statuary Walk leads east toward the Pony Express monument. Paved, flat, and suitable for all visitors. nps.gov/places/this-is-the-place-heritage-park.htm
Heritage Village is a reconstructed settlement of pioneer-era buildings where costumed docents and historical interpreters share history and demonstrate early crafts and trades. Visitors can wander blacksmith shops, homes, schools, and shops spread across the grounds. Most active in the warmer months. nps.gov/places/this-is-the-place-heritage-park.htm
The National Pony Express Monument features a replica Pony Express station and a dramatic Avard Fairbanks sculpture of a relay rider changing horses. Interpretive wayside exhibits explain how riders carried mail through Emigration Canyon into Salt Lake City. It sits along an easy paved path inside the park. nps.gov/places/this-is-the-place-heritage-park.htm
Family-friendly activities inside Heritage Village include pony rides, a small train, craft stations, and a petting area with farm animals. These are geared at younger children and run on seasonal schedules. Strollers and wagons roll easily on the main paths. nps.gov/places/this-is-the-place-heritage-park.htm
The Visitor Center introduces the story of the Mormon pioneers' 1,300-mile journey from Nauvoo, Illinois, to the Great Salt Lake Valley. Exhibits cover the California, Mormon Pioneer, and Pony Express national historic trails that converge in Salt Lake City. A good first stop to plan a walking route through the grounds. nps.gov/places/this-is-the-place-heritage-park.htm
Emigration Canyon climbs directly from the park into the Wasatch foothills, tracing the route the pioneers followed into the valley. It is a short, scenic drive with pullouts and restaurants; narrow shoulders mean smaller Class B or C RVs handle it best. Fall foliage is especially striking here.
Red Butte Garden is a 100-acre botanical garden adjacent to the University of Utah, just a few minutes from the park. Paved paths wind through themed gardens with mountain views, and the site hosts a popular summer outdoor concert series. Large on-site lots typically accommodate RVs outside concert days.

This Is The Place Heritage Park, UT, United States
The park sits at 2601 E Sunnyside Ave in Salt Lake City, just minutes from downtown via I-80 and Foothill Drive, and is easily reached from Provo (about 45 miles south, roughly an hour) and Ogden (about 40 miles north). Salt Lake City International Airport is approximately 10 miles west, making this a practical fly-and-rent destination. RV drivers should note that surrounding canyon roads like Emigration Canyon and the routes to Park City (I-80 over Parleys Summit) include steep grades and can see heavy winter snow, so chains or winter tires may be required from late fall into spring. The park itself is urban and accessible by standard roads, with no tunnels or low-clearance restrictions on the main approach.
