Late May through early October is generally the best window for RV camping, when campground loops are fully open and the river is warm enough for paddling and fishing. June and September are popular shoulder months with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and lighter weekend traffic than mid-summer. Fall color peaks in mid October across the oak and maple woods, making it a scenic time for short stays. Winter visits are possible for day use, but expect limited services and potential snow or ice on park roads.

The Wapsipinicon is a slow, meandering river well suited to canoes, kayaks, and tubing. Access points inside and near the park let visitors do short floats or longer downstream runs, and smallmouth bass fishing is popular from the water.
A network of woodland trails winds through the park's limestone bluffs and passes small caves, including the well known Ice Cave near the river. Trails are mostly short and moderate, with some rocky steps and stairways along the steeper sections.
Wapsipinicon hosts one of Iowa's oldest public golf courses, a scenic nine-hole layout set among the park's mature trees. The clubhouse and fairways sit a short drive from the main campground, making a round an easy half-day activity for RV guests.
Anglers target smallmouth bass, channel catfish, walleye, and panfish from the riverbanks and from boats. Dutch Creek, which flows into the Wapsipinicon inside the park, adds quieter backwater spots that are easy to reach on foot.
Several stone picnic shelters and the park lodge were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and remain in use today. They sit near open lawns and river overlooks, offering shaded tables that work well for group meals and rainy-day gatherings.
The park sits on the edge of Anamosa, a small eastern Iowa town with local cafes, shops, and the Grant Wood Art Gallery honoring the American Gothic painter who grew up nearby. It is an easy add-on for a half-day off the campsite.
The Grant Wood Scenic Byway passes through Anamosa and winds across the rolling farm country that inspired the artist's paintings. The route is paved throughout and suitable for most RVs, with numerous pullouts, small towns, and viewpoints.
Until was in great condition, pulls easily. Everything worked as expected. Seamless pick up and drop off.

Wapsipinicon State Park, IA, United States
The park sits just off US Highway 151 on the south edge of Anamosa, Iowa, roughly 30 miles northeast of Cedar Rapids and about 75 miles north of Iowa City, each around a 45 to 90 minute drive. From the Quad Cities, plan on roughly 75 miles, or about an hour and a half, via US 61 and US 151. Interior park roads are paved but narrow and winding with some steep grades down to the river, so larger rigs should scout turnarounds and avoid the most twisting loops. The nearest major airport for fly and rent trips is The Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) in Cedar Rapids.
