Primitive camping at Lake Macbride State Park places you in a shaded, non-modern setting near the shores of Lake Macbride in Solon, Iowa — part of one of the state's most beloved outdoor destinations. Nestled in the rolling hills of eastern Iowa, this campground offers a back-to-basics experience surrounded by oak and hickory forest, with access to the park's extensive recreational offerings. Campers enjoy picnic tables, grills, restrooms, water hookups, and a playground, along with a pet-friendly environment and miles of hiking trails winding through restored prairie and lakeside woodland. Lake Macbride itself spans over 800 acres and supports excellent fishing for walleye, muskie, Kentucky spotted bass, and channel catfish. The park features seven boat ramps, a kayak and paddleboard rental operation, a swimming beach, and an ADA-accessible fishing pier. With more than seven miles of hiking trails and activities like birdwatching, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling, this park offers diverse recreational options. Named after Thomas Macbride, the father of Iowa conservation, this park is a family-friendly retreat within easy reach of Iowa City and the Coralville Lake area. Reservations are required and available through the Iowa State Parks reservation system.
