Things to do at William E. deGarthe Provincial Park

  • Fishermen's Monument sculpture walk Easy

The Fishermen's Monument is a large granite relief carved directly into a natural rock outcrop by artist William E. deGarthe, honouring Nova Scotia fishermen and their families. A short interpretive path lets visitors view the sculpture up close in under 20 minutes.

  • Peggy's Point Lighthouse visit Easy
    RV parking available

Peggy's Point Lighthouse is one of Canada's most photographed lighthouses, perched on wave-worn granite at the edge of the village next to the park. A paved viewing area and boardwalk make it easy to explore on foot.

  • Peggy's Cove village stroll Easy
    RV parking available

The working fishing village around the park offers narrow lanes, weathered fish shacks, and harbour views within a short walk of the sculpture site. Local galleries, a post office in a lighthouse, and seafood restaurants round out the visit.

  • Swissair Flight 111 Memorial at Whalesback Easy
    RV parking available

The Swissair Flight 111 Memorial is a quiet oceanfront monument about two kilometres from Peggy's Cove commemorating the offshore crash. A small gravel lot and short paved walk make it accessible for most RV travellers.

  • Polly's Cove coastal hike Moderate
    RV parking available

Polly's Cove is an open barrens-and-granite hike just up the road from Peggy's Cove with panoramic Atlantic views. The informal trail is uneven and exposed, so wear sturdy footwear and watch for slick rocks near the shore.

  • Lighthouse Route scenic drive Easy
    RV parking available

The Lighthouse Route (Route 333 and Highway 3) links Peggy's Cove with other historic South Shore villages like Chester, Mahone Bay, and Lunenburg. It makes a natural day-trip loop for RV travellers based near Halifax.

Camper van was absolutely amazing. Comfortable bed, tons of light, fridge, water and everything you could possibly need! Gas wasn’t much more than an suv would be. Dean is a fantastic guy and made we knew everything about the van before heading out and was great dealing with little hiccups along the way. Would recommend this way of travel (and renting through Dean) to anyone!

Caroline and her husband were wonderful hosts! They took the time to get us up to speed on their van, and point out what we needed to know. The van came well equipped with stove, camping chairs and even an awning! We great enjoyed our trip in their van!

How to get to William E. deGarthe Provincial Park

From Halifax, the park is roughly a 45-kilometre, 45 to 60 minute drive southwest via Highway 103 and Route 333 along the Lighthouse Route. From Lunenburg and Mahone Bay, expect about 90 minutes on coastal routes. RV drivers should note that Route 333 is a winding two-lane coastal road and that Peggy's Cove village itself has very limited, congested parking with tight turns, so larger rigs are best left at an overflow lot or a nearby campground and day-tripped in by towed vehicle. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent travellers is Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ), about an hour's drive away.
