Campgrounds and RV parks near Athens, GA

In town, visitors use downtown Athens for restaurants, live music, and the University of Georgia campus, including the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. The North Oconee River Greenway offers flat walking and biking close to the city. At Watson Mill Bridge State Park, the centerpiece is a 229-foot covered bridge, the longest covered bridge still in use in Georgia, spanning the South Fork River. The park also has hiking trails and dedicated horseback riding trails winding through wooded terrain along the river. At Fort Yargo, mountain bikers and hikers share more than 20 miles of trails, and a 260-acre lake offers a swimming beach, fishing, and boat ramps. The park also features a wooded disc golf course and a miniature golf course. In summer, visitors often wade in the shoals below the covered bridge at Watson Mill.

Athens has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid, winters are cool with occasional snow, and rainfall is spread fairly evenly through the year, with heavy downpours possible in warmer months. The maximum temperature reaches 90 degrees or higher on about half the days from June through August, though prolonged extreme heat is unusual. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days and cool nights. Campgrounds fill quickly around University of Georgia home football weekends in the fall, graduation in May, and major campus events, so weekend availability tightens well in advance. Wildflowers and dogwoods bloom in April, and fall color in the surrounding hardwoods typically peaks in late October and early November. Winter is quieter. The main campground at Watson Mill Bridge closes for roughly three months during the off-season, while the equestrian side stays open year-round. Private parks including Commerce/Athens KOA and Georgia RV Park generally stay open through the colder months for travelers who want off-season quiet and empty trails.

Expect wooded, shaded sites at the state parks and more open, full-service layouts at the private RV parks. Sites at Watson Mill Bridge include both pull-through and back-in options with 30-amp electric and water hookups, plus three primitive walk-in sites along the creek, and most sit on level gravel pads under mature trees. Sites are generally electric and water rather than full hookup, and a dump station is available at the park. Cell service can be spotty at creek level but improves near the bathhouse, which has hot showers and coin laundry. The campground can accommodate rigs up to 50 feet, though the covered bridge has a 9-foot clearance and 3-ton weight limit, so larger RVs should enter from Highway 22. Standard leash and quiet-hours rules apply.
