Campgrounds near Fairmount, Georgia
Fairmount sits in Gordon County in North Georgia, roughly midway between Cartersville and Ellijay along the Highway 411 corridor. The town gives RV travelers quick access to two very different landscapes: the reservoirs of the upper Piedmont to the south, and the southern Blue Ridge foothills to the north and east. Most established campgrounds within a short drive fall into three groups: Georgia State Parks, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks on Allatoona Lake, and privately operated RV resorts.
On the state-park side, Red Top Mountain State Park sits just off Interstate 75 north of Atlanta in Cartersville, covering a wooded peninsula on Lake Allatoona. Closer to town, Bartow Gatewood Park (Bartow Beach Campground) offers a smaller lakeside option, while Plum Nelly Campground and Talona Ridge RV Resort serve travelers heading toward Ellijay and the Cohutta foothills. Allatoona Campground and Beach rounds out the Lake Allatoona shoreline choices, one of the most frequently visited U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lakes in the nation.
Things to do near Fairmount
Water recreation drives most trip planning. Lake Allatoona anchors the region, and visitors can bring their own boats or rent from nearby marinas, and hikers have more than 15 miles of trails winding through the forested park at Red Top Mountain. Swim beaches, boat ramps, and shoreline fishing are standard at both state and Corps sites. Families staying at Bartow Gatewood Park (Bartow Beach Campground) or Allatoona Campground and Beach can walk to the water directly.
Off the water, day trips from Fairmount reach Carters Lake to the north, the Etowah Indian Mounds and Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, and the shops and orchards of Ellijay. Talona Ridge RV Resort and Plum Nelly Campground put travelers within easy reach of the Cartecay River for kayaking and trout fishing in cooler months.

The main camping season runs from March through early November. Spring brings wildflowers and cool nights but is also a wet stretch, with thunderstorms common through May. Summer is the most popular time to visit, although the heat can be unpleasant; a sandy swimming beach nestled in a cove is a great place to cool off. Humidity is high, and afternoon storms build almost daily in July and August.
Fall is the sweet spot for RV travelers. Cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the ridges make October and early November strong booking windows. Winter camping is possible at year-round sites, but overnight lows can dip below freezing and some private amenities such as pools close.
Because Red Top Mountain and the Corps parks sit within an easy drive of Atlanta, weekends fill fast. Reservations for Red Top Mountain State Park can be made online through the Georgia State Parks reservation system, and it is advisable to book in advance, especially during holidays and peak summer months when the campground fills quickly.
How to book campgrounds near Fairmount
Booking rules depend on who runs the park. For Red Top Mountain State Park and other Georgia State Parks, booking is recommended in advance and can be easily done online or by phone up to 13 months in advance. Reservations can only be made for a certain site type, not specific sites, and the site is assigned at check-in.
Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Lake Allatoona, including Allatoona Campground and Beach, are booked through Recreation.gov. Camping limit is 14 consecutive days or 14 non-consecutive days in any 30-day period at all Corps of Engineers operated campgrounds on the Allatoona Lake Project. Private parks such as Talona Ridge RV Resort and Plum Nelly Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and typically require a deposit at booking.
What to expect on arrival
Most RV sites in the area offer 30 and 50 amp electric with water, and dump stations are standard. Full sewer hookups are more common at private resorts than at state or federal parks. Sites at Red Top Mountain and the Corps campgrounds tend to be wooded and hilly, with varying degrees of shade and privacy. The campground itself is spread across a hilly, tree-covered area near Lake Allatoona, with different camping sections offering varying levels of privacy and lake access.
Check-in is straightforward but time-sensitive. Campers must arrive by 10pm; late-night check-in is not available. Campers check in at the Trading Post to get the gate code before heading to the campground. Cell service is spotty in wooded coves, so downloading maps and confirmations before arrival is wise. Leashed pets are welcome at most parks.

How much does an RV rental in Fairmount, GA typically cost?
An RV rental in Fairmount is one of the more affordable ways to explore North Georgia's mountains and lakes. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes ranging from $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs from $250 and up. Pricing depends on the season, RV size, and add-ons. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fairmount,GeorgiaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Fairmount, Georgia?
Good news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Fairmount, Georgia. The State of Georgia does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs. You'll just need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, with a valid driver's license that we verify through the platform during checkout. Visiting from another country? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license, which you can pick up from your local auto club for around $20. Most renters are surprised how simple the process is, and your host will walk you through the entire RV at pickup.
dds.georgia.gov/license-classes-restrictions-and-endorsementsWhat protection is included when I book an RV in Fairmount?
Every RVezy booking in Fairmount automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you drive away. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle, giving you financial peace of mind without arranging separate coverage. During checkout, you'll choose from different protection tiers depending on how much coverage you'd like, so you can match it to your trip and budget. This isn't traditional auto insurance, but it's purpose-built for peer-to-peer RV rentals. Pick your protection level early in checkout so you can see the all-in price before you confirm your Fairmount RV trip.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental (not the host), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that, your refund depends on how far in advance you cancel, and RVezy has special provisions for events like natural disasters, which matter in North Georgia where summer thunderstorms and the occasional winter ice storm can occur. Because the policy varies based on timing and circumstances, review the cancellation details on the RVezy Help Center before you book. Pick your travel dates as early as possible to lock in the best Fairmount-area RV before the Blue Ridge summer rush.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Fairmount, GA?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Fairmount options are ready for your four-legged co-pilot. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see listings where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome, then message the host with your pet's size and breed so they can confirm. Fairmount sits in pet-paradise territory: dogs are allowed on-leash on most trails at nearby Carters Lake, Fort Mountain State Park, and the Cohutta Wilderness. The Pinhoti Trail also has dog-friendly sections within 30 minutes of town. Pro tip: bring a long lead and a collapsible water bowl, since summer temperatures in the Georgia foothills regularly hit the upper 80s and your pup will appreciate shady creekside breaks.
gastateparks.org/PetsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or rental property in Fairmount?
Yes, RV delivery in Fairmount is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you've never towed a trailer before. Popular delivery spots include Carters Lake's Doll Mountain and Woodring Branch campgrounds, Fort Mountain State Park, and private cabins around Talking Rock and Jasper. Use the Delivery filter when browsing listings to see hosts who offer this service, then message them with your address for a quote (most charge by the mile). dot.ga.gov/DriveSmartWhere are the best campgrounds near Fairmount, GA?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Fairmount adventures. Four standouts within an hour: Doll Mountain Campground on Carters Lake (Army Corps of Engineers site with full hookups, lake views, and a swim beach, about 20 minutes away); Woodring Branch Campground, also on Carters Lake, with electric and water sites tucked under hardwoods; Fort Mountain State Park near Chatsworth (70+ RV sites with hookups, hiking, and the famous mystery stone wall, about 35 minutes); and Amicalola Falls State Park (RV sites near Georgia's tallest waterfall, about 45 minutes). For a private option, try Talking Rock Creek Resort just south of Jasper. Pro tip: book Carters Lake sites the moment they open, since the lakefront pads sell out months ahead for summer weekends.
gastateparks.org/FortMountainWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Fairmount, GA?
Fairmount shines almost year-round thanks to its mild North Georgia foothills climate. Spring (mid-March through May) brings dogwoods, redbuds, and daytime highs of 65 to 78°F, perfect for hiking. Summer (June through August) is warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, great for swimming at Carters Lake. Fall (mid-September through early November) is the local insider favorite, with crisp 60 to 75°F days and spectacular leaf color on Fort Mountain and the Cohuttas, usually peaking in mid- to late October. Winters are mild (40s and 50s) with occasional frost, so RV trips are absolutely doable. Pro tip: book your RV rental Georgia adventure for the third weekend in October to catch peak foliage without the Smokies crowds.
weather.gov/ffc/I've never rented an RV before. How does pickup and orientation work?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup (usually 30 to 60 minutes) covering the propane, water, electrical hookups, slide-outs, generator, leveling, and waste tanks, so you leave knowing exactly how everything works. Many Fairmount-area hosts also send a video orientation in advance and stay reachable by text throughout your trip. If you're nervous about driving, start with a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer, or pick a host who offers delivery so the rig is already set up at your campsite. Pro tip: do a short practice drive on Highway 411 (flat and quiet north of town) before heading up into Fort Mountain's switchbacks, and you'll feel like a pro by day two.
dds.georgia.gov/drivers-manualsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Fairmount booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. One call gets a technician dispatched to your location, whether you're parked at Carters Lake, climbing Fort Mountain, or rolling down I-75 toward Atlanta. Your host is also typically a phone call or text away to help troubleshoot quirks of their specific RV, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Tip: snap photos of the RV's VIN, license plate, and current location when you stop, so if you ever need to call for help, you can share the details in seconds.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Fairmount RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, multi-state travel is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Fairmount. You're free to cross into Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, South Carolina, and Florida with your RVezy rental, all within a day's drive. Popular routes include Fairmount to the Great Smoky Mountains (about 2.5 hours), Fairmount to Chattanooga and Nashville (about 5 hours to Nashville), and Fairmount to the Florida Gulf Coast (about 8 hours). Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so message the host directly before booking if that's your plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, as protection coverage doesn't extend there. The Foothills Parkway and the Tail of the Dragon are both within reach for a great three-day mountain loop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in Georgia?
Budgeting for fuel is easier than you'd think. Class C motorhomes around Fairmount average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class A gas rigs get 6 to 9 mpg, campervans (Class B) get a more efficient 14 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on the tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg). Georgia gas prices are consistently among the lowest in the Southeast, often 20 to 40 cents below the national average, and you'll find affordable stations along Highway 411, I-75 at Adairsville, and in Calhoun. Diesel is widely available at the Pilot and Love's near I-75 Exit 312. Pro tip: fill up before heading into the Cohutta Wilderness or up GA-52 toward Fort Mountain, since prices climb the deeper you go into the mountains.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campsite near Fairmount?
Book early and you'll have the pick of the prettiest sites. Georgia State Parks (including Fort Mountain and Amicalola Falls) accept reservations up to 13 months in advance through the official ReserveAmerica portal, and Georgia residents get a 14-month window. Carters Lake's Army Corps campgrounds open six months ahead on Recreation.gov and the lakefront sites disappear within minutes for summer holidays. For most spring and fall weekends, aim to book at least 60 to 90 days out; midweek and winter trips are often available a week or two ahead. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly six months before your target Carters Lake weekend, log in at 10 a.m. Eastern, and you'll snag the waterfront pads the locals fight over.
gastateparks.org/ReservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Fairmount, GA?
Driving an RV around Fairmount is refreshingly manageable. The town sits just off Highway 411, a wide two-lane road with gentle terrain that's perfect for new RVers. I-75 runs 15 minutes west through Calhoun and Adairsville, giving you fast access to Atlanta or Chattanooga without any tricky urban driving. The one place to take it slow is GA-52 climbing Fort Mountain, with its switchbacks and 7% grades, so downshift, use low gear on the descent, and you'll be fine. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms in summer and the occasional patch of ice on mountain roads in January. Pro tip: avoid I-285 around Atlanta during weekday rush hour; loop east on I-575 and GA-400 instead for a much calmer route.

You'll find well-equipped campgrounds in every direction. Most RV parks near Fairmount, including Doll Mountain and Woodring Branch on Carters Lake, offer 30/50-amp electric, water hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, modern bathhouses with hot showers, and on-site dump stations. Fresh-water fill stations are available at every Georgia State Park and at the Carters Lake Visitor Center. Seatbelts are provided for every legal travel passenger. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message your host if you need specifics like a particular bed size, kid-friendly seating, or a coffee maker, since most are happy to customize the inventory before pickup.

Payment is straightforward and secure. A refundable security deposit is also placed on hold (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) right before pickup, and it's released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, do a walk-around video with your host at pickup and again at return, follow the host's fuel and dump-station instructions, and report any issues immediately through the RVezy app. Tip: take 60 seconds of slow-pan video of the interior and exterior at pickup, and you'll have zero stress about your deposit refund.
