Campgrounds near North Vernon
North Vernon sits in Jennings County in southeastern Indiana, within easy driving range of several Indiana DNR state parks and smaller private campgrounds. RV travelers use the town as a base for the Muscatatuck River corridor, the Ohio River valley to the south, and the rolling hills around Versailles and Madison.
The closest options run from small local grounds such as Weary Traveler and CERA Sports Park & Campground to full-service state park loops. Clifty Falls State Park is an Indiana state park on 1,416 acres in Jefferson County, and Versailles State Park is Indiana's second largest state park, both within a short drive south and east. Wooser Campground at Hardy Lake State Recreation Area offers lake-side sites to the west.
Most state park loops accept RVs on paved or gravel pads with electric hookups, while private grounds vary in hookup availability. Reservations across the DNR system are managed through a single online portal, which simplifies planning across multiple parks in one trip.
Things to do near North Vernon
Hiking is the main draw at Clifty Falls. The park features a deep canyon carved by Clifty Creek, four major waterfalls, and an abandoned railroad tunnel, with Tunnel Falls the tallest at 83 feet. Many trails leading into the canyon are rugged or very rugged, so families with young children should plan easier rim loops.
At Versailles State Park, the 230-acre lake anchors most activity. Visitors can fish on the 230-acre lake and rent a rowboat, kayak or canoe, and take a walk on the hiking trails or a ride on the mountain bike trails. Hardy Lake adds swimming, fishing, and paddling. The Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, just south of North Vernon, is a quieter half-day option for birding and short walks.

The southeastern Indiana camping season runs roughly late April through October at full service, with shoulder-season camping available at reduced services in cooler months. Some services will be limited in the winter, and water is typically turned off from November through mid-March or April.
Summer weekends and holiday weekends draw the heaviest traffic. Peak-season electric loops at Versailles and Clifty Falls tend to book out first, so consider mid-week stays for better availability and a quieter experience. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and local events including the Versailles Pumpkin Show in the town of Versailles on the last weekend in September or the Bluegrass Festival on the first weekend of October.
Winter camping is possible at limited state park loops but expect reduced water service and no camp-store hours. Spring can be wet, so check trail conditions before booking rugged hiking days at Clifty Falls, where waterfall flow peaks from December through June.

How to book a site
Indiana DNR state parks, including Clifty Falls, Versailles, and Hardy Lake, use a single central reservation system operated by the DNR through camp.IN.gov. Reservations for the campgrounds can be made up to 6 months in advance, beginning at 12 noon on that day. The same window applies at Versailles and Hardy Lake.
Book online through the DNR reservation portal or call the DNR call center. The call center number is 1-866-6CAMP-IN (1-866-622-6746), open Monday to Friday 12pm to 8pm EST and Saturday to Sunday 12pm to 5pm EST. For popular summer weekends, aim to book the day the 6-month window opens. Private grounds such as Weary Traveler and CERA Sports Park & Campground handle their own bookings directly through the operator.
What to expect on-site
State park loops in this area are paved or gravel with electric hookups at most sites, plus dump stations for RVs. Versailles offers paved camping pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and electric hookups, with modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Full water and sewer hookups at each site are uncommon, so plan to use dump stations on the way out.
Entrance fees apply on top of camping fees at Indiana state parks, and vehicle limits are enforced. Only one mode of transportation per campsite is allowed, and all others must be parked in overflow parking located near the campground gatehouse.
Cell coverage in the wooded loops can be spotty, especially in the Clifty Creek canyon. Sites at Versailles vary in levelness by loop, so review the site map before locking in a specific number.

Booking is low risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and the specific terms for your trip are shown during checkout so there are no surprises. The sweet spot for RV camping North Vernon runs late April through late October, when daytime highs sit in the 65 to 85 degree range and trees explode with color in mid to late October. July and August get humid (highs in the upper 80s, occasional thunderstorms), so many seasoned travelers prefer May, September, and early October for cooler nights and fewer bugs. Indiana State Park campgrounds typically operate at full services from late April through early November. Pro tip: the bluebells at Cali Nature Preserve and Muscatatuck County Park usually peak in mid-April, making an early-spring RV getaway one of the area's best-kept secrets.
weather.gov/ind/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving it around North Vernon?
You've got this, and North Vernon is actually a great place for first time renting an RV. Roads here are flat to gently rolling, traffic is light outside Indianapolis rush hour, and most highways (US 50, State Roads 3 and 7) have wide shoulders and clear sightlines. Every RVezy host gives a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and dump procedures, plus you can message them anytime mid-trip. If you'd rather skip the driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: do a short loop on county roads near Muscatatuck Park before heading to your campground, just to get comfortable with the mirrors and turning radius.
in.gov/indot/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a single phone call gets help dispatched whether you're on Interstate 65 heading toward Indianapolis or parked at a remote site near Crosley Fish and Wildlife Area. The roadside team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions about how a system works. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's appliance brands and model numbers during your pickup walkthrough, it makes any troubleshooting call faster and easier.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my North Vernon RV rental into other states or across the Canadian border?
Yes, interstate travel is allowed and one of the joys of an RV rental Indiana trip. From North Vernon you can easily head into Kentucky for Mammoth Cave, Ohio for Hocking Hills, Tennessee for the Smokies, or Michigan for the Great Lakes. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance terms, so message them through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a popular 7 day loop from North Vernon hits Mammoth Cave, Nashville, Tennessee, and the Smoky Mountains before circling home.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Indiana RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but Indiana keeps things friendlier than the coasts: gas in the North Vernon area typically runs a bit below the national average, often in the $3.00 to $3.50 per gallon range. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer about 10 to 14 MPG. For a typical 3-day local loop of 200 to 300 miles, plan on $60 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or Love's near I-65 before heading into Brown County, where stations get sparser and prices climb.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near North Vernon?
For Indiana State Parks like Versailles, Clifty Falls, and Brown County, book 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays — they fill up fast through the official reservation system at indianastateparks.reserveamerica.com or 1-866-622-6746. Muscatatuck Jennings County Park is much easier with only 8 full-hookup sites; aim for 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Private campgrounds and Hipcamp-style sites near North Vernon often have last-minute openings, especially midweek. Pro tip: Indiana residents pay a lower entrance fee than out-of-state guests at state parks, so out-of-staters should budget about $9 per vehicle per day on top of camping fees.
indianastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around North Vernon?
Driving an RV around North Vernon is refreshingly easy. Terrain is flat to gently rolling, US 50 and State Roads 3 and 7 are well-maintained two- to four-lane highways, and you'll rarely hit serious traffic. Watch for occasional farm equipment in spring and fall, deer at dawn and dusk (especially near Selmier State Forest), and the rare summer thunderstorm that can drop quick downpours. Winter brings occasional snow and ice from December through February, so most renters stick to April through November. Pro tip: avoid driving through Indianapolis on I-65 between 4 and 6 p.m. on weekdays — instead, take State Road 7 to US 31 for a calmer scenic route north.

fs.usda.gov/hoosierHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform when you book (never in cash directly to the host), which keeps your money protected and your booking confirmed. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before the trip starts, then released after dropoff assuming the RV comes back in the condition it left in. Deposit amounts vary by rig and are clearly shown on each listing. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at both pickup and dropoff in North Vernon: it makes deposit returns smooth and protects everyone involved.
