Campgrounds near Greencastle, Indiana
Greencastle sits in west-central Indiana, roughly 40 miles west of Indianapolis and within short driving distance of two Indiana DNR reservoirs that anchor most RV camping in the area. Lieber State Recreation Area at Cagles Mill Lake is reached from I-70 Exit 37 at Putnamville, about 3 miles south on SR 243, placing it just south of Greencastle. Cecil M. Harden Lake, home to Raccoon State Recreation Area, lies about 50 miles west of Indianapolis in Indiana's covered bridge country and offers diverse camping options surrounding the 2,060-acre reservoir.
Both reservoirs were built for flood control and now serve as the main boating, fishing, and swimming destinations for the region. Cagles Mill Lake was constructed as part of the Flood Control Act of 1938, and the 1,400-acre lake sits near Cataract Falls on Mill Creek.
Renters staying at Sunny Acres Lake Lieber State Recreation Area, Misty Morning Campground, Fallen Rock Campground, Raccoon State Recreation Area, or Hickory Hills Campground will find a mix of state-run electric and non-electric sites plus privately operated parks with fuller hookups.
Things to do around Greencastle
Water recreation dominates. Cagles Mill Lake allows unlimited-horsepower boating, and anglers pursue a dozen fish species from the lake's boat launches. The 2,060-acre Cecil M. Harden Lake features a large sandy swimming beach with concessions, boat rentals, and multiple boat ramps.
On land, Raccoon offers hiking trails, an archery range, playgrounds, and a paved multi-use path for biking and walking. Trail options include rugged loops with sandstone cliff views and moderate paths through second-growth forest and lake overlooks.
Off-park side trips include Cataract Falls near Lieber SRA and, from Raccoon, the nearby Historic Mansfield Roller Mill, a preserved 1880s flour mill that shows how flour and cornmeal were processed from wheat and corn. Parke County's covered bridges are within easy reach for a day trip.

December - February
39° / 21°F 70 mmCold; reduced services at state parks
The state-park campgrounds run year-round, but activity is heavily weighted to the warm months. Raccoon and Lieber are both listed as open year round on the Indiana DNR reservation system, though beaches, concessions, and interpretive programs are seasonal. At Raccoon, only one electric loop and the primitive campground stay open through winter with reduced rates once comfort stations close.
Summer weekends are the peak. Beach access, boat rentals, and shaded electric sites book out first, and holiday weekends fill months ahead. Fall brings cooler nights and hardwood color, and September is typically the driest month locally. Spring is quieter but wetter, and May storms can leave low-lying primitive sites soft.
Winter camping is possible at the state recreation areas, but shower buildings and camp stores may close or run on reduced service. Blue-green algae advisories can appear on Cagles Mill Lake in warm months; under a yellow advisory swimming and boating are permitted, but visitors should avoid contact with algae and avoid swallowing lake water.

Richard was very responsive to any questions that I had prior to picking unit up. Trailer was very clean and still looks like new inside. Had all the basic necessities both inside and out to ensure easy set-up. Would highly recommend this unit if you are camping in Indy area. Donnie Luce-CA

I had a great vacation and the ease of renting the camper made it so much better than staying in a hotel. Richard made it an easy transaction and was there if I needed any help. The camper was accommodating, very clean and comfortable to sleep in. I won't hesitate to do this again in the future and look forward to having another fulfilled adventure.

How to book campgrounds near Greencastle
State-run sites at Lieber and Raccoon are reserved through the Indiana DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made for today and up to 6 months in advance for most sites, while some site types must be booked at least 2 days ahead of arrival and can be reserved up to 12 months out. Booking early is strongly recommended for summer weekends and any holiday.
Campground check-in and check-out is 2:00 p.m., and on Sundays and designated holidays it shifts to 5:00 p.m. Unreserved sites are rented first-come, first-served on the day of arrival, with registration at the gatehouse, property office, or self-registration station.
Private parks such as Misty Morning Campground, Fallen Rock Campground, and Hickory Hills Campground are booked directly with the operator. An Indiana DNR entrance fee or annual entrance permit applies at state properties in addition to the site fee.
What to expect on-site
Expect wooded sites with mixed hookup levels. The Lieber campground spans over 200 sites across multiple areas, most tucked under hardwood and pine canopy, and is divided into Class A electric-only sites and Class B sites with full hookups, with electric service at 30 amp. Raccoon offers non-electric, 30-amp, and 50-amp sites; most sites do not have water hookups, and some pull-through sites are available.
Restrooms and showers are standard state-park issue: functional but not air-conditioned. Dump stations exist at both parks but can back up on Sunday-morning checkout.
Cell coverage is spotty to nonexistent through much of Lieber and can be limited in parts of Raccoon, so renters should download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival. Firewood must follow Indiana's rules to prevent pest spread, and an Indiana fishing license is required for anglers.
