Campgrounds near New Bedford
New Bedford sits on Buzzards Bay in southeastern Massachusetts, within easy driving distance of state park campgrounds, private RV resorts, and the beaches of the South Coast. The area works well as a base for trips that combine coastal camping with day drives to Cape Cod, Providence, and Newport.
The closest option is Horseneck Beach State Reservation in Westport, a coastal park on Buzzards Bay set behind the dunes with direct beach access. Inland to the north, Massasoit State Park in East Taunton provides a forested alternative with lakes and ponds, while Gateway to Cape Cod RV Campground sits along the route toward the Cape Cod Canal.
Families planning longer stays often look to Boston / Cape Cod KOA Holiday and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Cranberry Acres in Carver, MA, both within reasonable towing distance of New Bedford and known for full-hookup sites and organized activities.
Things to do near New Bedford
The New Bedford waterfront and the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park are quick trips from any of the nearby campgrounds and pair well with a day at the beach. Horseneck Beach State Reservation offers two miles of sandy shoreline, a boat ramp on Buzzards Bay, and paddling access to the salt marshes of the Westport River.
Inland, Massasoit State Park has swimming at a designated beach, kayaking on its ponds, hiking and mountain-bike trails, and a working cranberry bog that is especially colorful in fall. Ferries from nearby ports serve Martha's Vineyard, Cuttyhunk, and Nantucket for day trips.
For kids, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Cranberry Acres in Carver, MA and Boston / Cape Cod KOA Holiday both program pools, playgrounds, and themed weekends through the summer.

The camping window on the South Coast is short. State-run campgrounds in this part of Massachusetts are strictly seasonal: Horseneck Beach opens in early May and runs through Columbus Day, and Massasoit State Park runs on a similar warm-season schedule. Private parks in the area generally open a few weeks earlier in spring and stay open later into the fall than the state sites.
July and August bring the warmest ocean temperatures, the busiest beaches, and the highest demand for coastal sites. Weekends fill first, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day book out furthest in advance.
Late spring and early fall are quieter and more comfortable for touring. September in particular offers warm days, cooler nights, and lower bug pressure. Ticks are a documented issue at coastal sites, especially in late summer, so tick checks and repellent are worth planning for. Winter camping is not available at the nearby state parks.

Me and my family rented a beautiful camper from Mathews Aspen trailer. Communication was great drop off was there when it was supposed to been dropped off, inside camper was extremely clean. It was left just as good when checking out.We only used camper for sleeping and the air conditioner worked perfect with temps close to 100° The campground that we stayed at had so many activities and so much going on that we never even spent a moment in the camper until evening. Five star experience.
David G. - Jul 2026
Mathew was awesome. Very friendly guy. We requested a delivery for his camper and by the time we got to the campgrounds at the agreed upon time to meet him at the entrance and show him where to setup.. he already had the camper completely ready to go on our site and was just waiting for us to arrive. Trailer was perfect. Looks brand new, clean, and everything worked with no issues. We will definitely give him repeat business. Highly recommend. Would give 6 stars if possible.

How to book
Massachusetts state park campgrounds, including Horseneck Beach State Reservation and Massasoit State Park, are reserved through the Massachusetts DCR camping system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to four months in advance of the arrival date, and walk-in camping is not allowed, though same-day reservations are accepted until 2 p.m. Popular coastal sites at Horseneck are typically the first to go once the booking window opens.
Private parks such as Gateway to Cape Cod RV Campground, Boston / Cape Cod KOA Holiday, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Cranberry Acres in Carver, MA use their own booking systems, either through the park website or through KOA and Jellystone national platforms. For summer weekends, book several months out; midweek shoulder-season stays are often available on shorter notice.
What to expect
Sites vary widely across the region. Horseneck Beach offers 100 fully asphalted back-in campsites, with electric hookups on sites 1 through 68 and each site including a paved spur, picnic table, and fire ring. The flat, coastal terrain can accommodate RVs up to 42 feet, though all sites are back-in only, and the layout is open and wind-exposed. Generators are not permitted in the campground.
Massasoit offers tent and standard electric sites in a forested setting, with flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, and a playground; there are no sewer hookups. Massachusetts prohibits transporting firewood into or out of any DCR campground, so plan to buy firewood on site. Cell coverage is generally good across the region, and private parks in the area typically offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near New Bedford, MA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in New Bedford, MA?
RV rental in New Bedford, MA is one of the more affordable ways to experience coastal New England. On RVezy, pop-up trailers and smaller travel trailers typically start around $90 to $140 per night, Class C motorhomes range from about $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs run from roughly $250 to $400 nightly. Hosts set their own pricing, so booking midweek or in the shoulder season (May or September) can save you 20% or more compared to peak July and August rates around Cape Cod ferry season. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in your dates before summer demand spikes from Boston and Providence travelers heading to the South Coast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Bedford%2C%20MassachusettsWhat license do I need to rent an RV in New Bedford?
Good news for first-timers: a regular Massachusetts driver's license (or any valid US/Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in New Bedford. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for any motorhome or trailer available on RVezy, including Class A rigs. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in. Most renters are surprised how simple the process is, you're really just a few clicks away from your South Coast adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in New Bedford protected if something goes wrong?
Absolutely, and that peace of mind is built right in. Every RV rental in New Bedford booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage tier (not the host) during booking, with multiple levels depending on how much extra cushion you want. It provides real financial protection so you can focus on whale-watching off Buzzards Bay instead of worst-case scenarios. Bonus: roadside help is one call away whether you're at Horseneck Beach or crossing the Braga Bridge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my New Bedford RV rental?
Booking feels lower-risk than you'd think. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every New Bedford RV rental, and there's a grace-period window after confirmation where you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that, your refund eligibility depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel, and RVezy makes accommodations for events like hurricanes or named tropical storms, which occasionally swing up the Atlantic coast toward southeastern Massachusetts in late summer. If your plans shift, reach out to RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options. That flexibility makes it easy to lock in your dates now while ferry slots and campsites are still open.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a New Bedford RV trip?
Yes, and the South Coast is a dream for pups. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in New Bedford are available on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Many local campgrounds, including Horseneck Beach State Reservation in Westport and Massasoit State Park in Taunton, allow leashed pets in camping areas. Fort Taber Park on New Bedford's southern tip has wide-open waterfront paths perfect for a morning walk, and Demarest Lloyd State Park in Dartmouth permits dogs in the off-season. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size guidelines so check-in is smooth.
mass.gov/locations/horseneck-beach-state-reservationCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in New Bedford?
Yes, RV delivery in New Bedford is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who don't want to drive a big rig through downtown traffic on Route 18. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your RV directly at campgrounds like Horseneck Beach State Reservation or Boston/Cape Cod KOA Holiday in Middleboro, or even your driveway in Dartmouth or Fairhaven. Delivery fees usually run on a per-mile basis from the host's location, and most will handle leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough so you can step in and start enjoying. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it, this is the easiest way to do an RV trip if you've never driven one before.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106534-Delivery-optionsHow far can I travel from New Bedford in my RV rental?
You've got an incredible range of trips within easy reach. From New Bedford, a Cape Cod RV trip is just 30 to 45 minutes to the Bourne or Sagamore Bridge, Newport, RI is about 40 minutes west, Boston is roughly 60 miles north (around 75 minutes), and Provincetown sits about 100 miles east at the Cape's tip. Many hosts offer generous daily mileage allowances (often 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage on longer bookings. Always check the listing's mileage policy before booking, and if you're planning a bigger loop into Maine or the Berkshires, message the host to see if extra miles can be added upfront at a discount.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Bedford%2C%20MassachusettsWhere can I camp near New Bedford with an RV?
You're spoiled for choice on the South Coast. Horseneck Beach State Reservation in Westport (about 20 minutes south) offers sites near Buzzards Bay. Massasoit State Park in Taunton has wooded sites about 25 minutes north. Boston/Cape Cod KOA Holiday in Middleboro is roughly 30 minutes away with full hookups and family amenities. Just over the canal, Scusset Beach State Reservation in Sandwich is a classic Cape gateway option, and Pinewood Lodge Campground in Plymouth is about 35 minutes northeast on a freshwater lake. These are among the best campgrounds near New Bedford, so book early for summer weekends, especially July and August.
mass.gov/locations/horseneck-beach-state-reservationWhen is the best time to visit New Bedford in an RV?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in New Bedford. Summer (June through August) brings warm 75 to 82 degree days perfect for beach hopping, ferry rides to Martha's Vineyard, and waterfront seafood at the State Pier, though it's also the busiest stretch. September is the local favorite: water is still swimmable, crowds thin out, and you'll catch the Working Waterfront Festival vibe. Early fall (late September to mid-October) adds spectacular foliage along Route 6 toward Fall River. Winters get cold (20s to 40s) and most campgrounds close from November through March. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season trip in September for the best mix of weather, availability, and pricing on your New Bedford RV trip.
weather.gov/box/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in New Bedford a good idea?
You're going to do great, and you're not alone. First time renting an RV is incredibly common on RVezy, and New Bedford is a friendly place to start. Roads on the South Coast are mostly flat, Route 6 and I-195 are well-marked, and the city's grid layout makes practice runs easy. Every RVezy host provides a full orientation and walkthrough at pickup covering generator, water, propane, slide-outs, and dump procedures, so you won't be left guessing. Choosing a smaller Class B campervan rental in New Bedford or a 20-something-foot travel trailer makes the learning curve gentle. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, book a host who offers delivery and setup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're covered around the clock. Every RV rental in New Bedford, MA booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you've got a flat on I-195 heading toward Cape Cod, a dead battery at Horseneck Beach, or a propane question at midnight. Roadside support handles tire changes, towing, jump-starts, and lockouts. Your host is also typically reachable by message for quick questions about the rig's quirks. For mechanical issues, RVezy's support team helps coordinate next steps. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before pickup, and you'll roll out feeling fully backed up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my New Bedford RV rental to Canada or other states?
Yes to nearby states and often to Canada too, but Mexico is off-limits. Most hosts allow travel throughout New England and the eastern seaboard. Classic RV road trip from New Bedford routes include Acadia National Park in Maine (about 6 hours northeast), the White Mountains in New Hampshire (around 3.5 hours), the Adirondacks in New York (5 hours), and the entire Cape Cod National Seashore. Cross-border travel into Canada is possible with some hosts since insurance can extend, but you'll need to confirm directly with the host before booking and bring a passport. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance coverage limits. Message the host upfront to lock in your route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a New Bedford RV trip?
Fuel is usually less than people expect. Massachusetts gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, and RVs in the New Bedford area average roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A and Class C motorhomes, 12 to 18 mpg for Class B campervans, and your tow vehicle's normal mpg minus a few for travel trailers. A typical weekend trip from New Bedford to Provincetown and back (about 200 miles round trip) might run $70 to $110 in fuel for a midsize motorhome. Pro tip: fill up in Fairhaven or Dartmouth before heading onto the Cape, where prices climb during summer.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near New Bedford?
Earlier is better, but you've got time if you act now. Massachusetts state park campgrounds like Horseneck Beach and Myles Standish open reservations through ReserveAmerica up to six months in advance, and summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) often book solid within days of opening. Private parks like Boston/Cape Cod KOA Holiday and Pinewood Lodge usually accept bookings a year out and fill up by April for July and August. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October, you can often grab a site one to three weeks ahead. Pro tip: if your dream campground is full, check midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday), they're far easier to score.
mass.gov/info-details/reserve-a-campsite-at-a-massachusetts-state-parkWhat are local driving conditions like around New Bedford?
Driving an RV around New Bedford is refreshingly manageable. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, I-195 and Route 6 are the main arteries and easily handle big rigs, and most state highways have generous shoulders. Two pinch points to know: the historic downtown around Union Street and the cobblestone New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park area have tight turns and low-clearance overhangs (stick to wider streets like Route 18 if you're in a Class A), and the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges onto Cape Cod can crawl on summer Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. Winter brings occasional nor'easters with snow and ice from December through March. Pro tip: avoid Cape-bound traffic by crossing before 10am Friday or after 8pm Sunday.
mass511.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near New Bedford?
Most campgrounds near New Bedford come well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Full-hookup sites with water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer are standard at private parks like Pinewood Lodge in Plymouth and Boston/Cape Cod KOA Holiday in Middleboro. State parks like Horseneck Beach and Myles Standish typically offer water and electric but no sewer at the site, with shared dump stations on the way out. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in wooded areas, so download maps and shows beforehand. Most parks have clean bathhouses with hot showers, laundry, camp stores, and propane refills. Pro tip: full-service campgrounds in nearby Dartmouth and Acushnet have dump stations and freshwater fills if you need to top up mid-trip.
mass.gov/locations/myles-standish-state-forestWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in New Bedford?
You're getting more than just wheels and a bed. A typical motorhome rental in New Bedford comes with a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 2 to 8 people depending on size, climate control with AC and furnace, and DOT-approved seatbelts for travel passengers. Most listings include linens, kitchenware, and basic camping gear (chairs, levelers, hoses), though add-ons vary. Many rigs have onboard generators for boondocking, and some include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, or solar panels. Wi-Fi hotspots are an add-on with many hosts. Check the amenities list on each RVezy listing and message the host if anything's unclear, they'll tell you exactly what's included so you only pack what you actually need.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Bedford%2C%20MassachusettsWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for an RV rental in New Bedford include bike racks (great for the Cape Cod Rail Trail), kayak or paddleboard packages, generator hours beyond the included allotment, extra propane, outdoor grills, beach gear bundles, linen and towel packs, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is usually at the host's location in greater New Bedford, with most hosts offering a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough; dropoff is at the same spot. Mileage policies vary, expect 100 to 150 free miles per day with overage rates around $0.30 to $0.45 per mile, or ask about an unlimited mileage package for longer trips. Reviewing all of this on the listing before booking keeps surprises to zero.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Bedford%2C%20MassachusettsHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, all handled through the RVezy platform with no cash changing hands with your host. You'll pay a portion at booking to confirm your dates, with the balance charged before pickup, and you can use major credit cards. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before your trip starts, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV's value, and it's released after the host confirms the rig came back in good shape with the tanks emptied as agreed. Pro tip to avoid issues: take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and dump instructions, and return on time. That way your deposit hits your account quickly and your next New Bedford RV trip is just a click away.
