2016 Mercedes-Benz Campervan

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Port-Cartier, QC

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Port-Cartier, QC?

RV rental in Port-Cartier is one of the most affordable ways to explore Quebec's wild Cote-Nord, with most travel trailers typically starting around $90 to $175 CAD per night and Class C motorhomes generally running $200 to $325 CAD per night. Because Port-Cartier sits far north and has a short peak season (mid-June to early September), you'll often find better value by booking shoulder-season weeks in early June or late September. Filter by Instant Book to lock in pricing quickly, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts since most visitors stay several days to explore the Port-Cartier-Sept-Iles Wildlife Reserve. For a cheap RV rental in Port-Cartier, smaller travel trailers and truck campers usually offer the best value.

What license do I need to rent an RV in Port-Cartier?

Good news: a regular Class 5 Quebec driver's licence (or its equivalent from anywhere in Canada, the US, or abroad) is all you need to rent an RV in Port-Cartier. No special motorhome endorsement or commercial licence is required for the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, or travel trailers on RVezy, since they all fall under standard non-commercial vehicle rules in Quebec. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens quickly in your RVezy account before pickup. Visiting from outside Canada? An International Driving Permit paired with your home licence keeps things simple, and you're ready to roll up Route 138.

Is renting an RV in Port-Cartier safe and what protection is included?

Every RV rental in Port-Cartier through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you pull onto Route 138. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, which is reassuring when you're driving remote stretches of the Cote-Nord where the next town might be 50 km away. During checkout you'll choose between protection tiers based on the level of coverage and deductible you prefer. Combined with around-the-clock RVezy support, this gives renters meaningful peace of mind before, during, and after your motorhome rental in Port-Cartier.

What happens if I need to cancel my Port-Cartier RV rental?

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in your Port-Cartier RV trip with confidence. Refund amounts after that grace period depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit so your plans stay on track. Full current cancellation details are shown during checkout and in your RVezy account, and the support team can walk you through your options anytime.

Can I bring my dog on a Port-Cartier RV rental?

Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Port-Cartier is easy to find: toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see motorhomes and trailers where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome. Port-Cartier is great for dog owners, with long sandy beaches at Plage Rochelois and the nearby Pointe-aux-Anglais coast, plus leash-friendly boardwalks at Parc des Rochers along the Riviere aux Rochers. Camping Les Pionniers and sites in the Reserve faunique de Port-Cartier-Sept-Iles typically allow leashed dogs. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee or size limit so pickup day is stress-free.

Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Port-Cartier?

Yes, RV delivery in Port-Cartier is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers and travellers flying into Sept-Iles Airport (YZV), about 65 km east on Route 138. Many local hosts will drive the RV to your chosen campground, level it on the pad, connect water and 30-amp shore power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means your first time renting an RV can start with simply unlocking the door at Camping Les Pionniers or Camping Lac Walker in the Reserve faunique de Port-Cartier-Sept-Iles. Filter by Delivery on RVezy and check the host's delivery radius for a hands-off start to your Port-Cartier RV trip.

How many kilometres do I get with my Port-Cartier RV rental?

Most hosts in Port-Cartier include a daily kilometre allowance (commonly 100 to 200 km per day) with the option to pre-purchase extra kilometres at a discount, and a growing number of listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for Cote-Nord road trips. For perspective on distances from Port-Cartier: Sept-Iles is about 65 km east, Baie-Comeau roughly 240 km west, Tadoussac (whale-watching capital) about 450 km southwest, and Havre-Saint-Pierre near the Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve sits about 290 km up Route 138. Map your route, then filter listings by mileage policy before booking so there are no surprises at return.

Where are the best campgrounds near Port-Cartier?

You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Port-Cartier. Top picks include: Camping Les Pionniers in town with hookups and easy beach access; Camping Lac Walker inside the Reserve faunique de Port-Cartier-Sept-Iles, set on one of Quebec's deepest lakes about 30 km off Route 138; Camping Plage Pointe-aux-Anglais on a long stretch of fine sand about 50 km southwest; and Camping municipal de Sept-Iles, 65 km east with full services and ocean views. For something truly wild, Parc national d'Anticosti is a ferry ride away. Reserve early through Sepaq for wildlife reserve sites, which are the most popular best campgrounds near Port-Cartier in July.
sepaq.com/rf/pos/sejour/camping.dot?language_id=1

When is the best time of year for a Port-Cartier RV trip?

The sweet spot for an RV trip in Port-Cartier is mid-June through mid-September, when daytime highs sit around 17 to 22 C and the Sepaq campgrounds, salmon fishing on the Riviere aux Rochers, and hiking in the Port-Cartier-Sept-Iles Wildlife Reserve are all in full swing. July and early August are warmest (and best for swimming at local beaches), while late August into September brings fewer bugs and the first golden boreal-forest colours. Spring arrives late this far north (snow can linger into May), and winter from November to April brings serious cold. Most hosts run a summer-only season, so book your motorhome rental in Port-Cartier by April for peak weeks.

I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Port-Cartier?

You'll be in great shape, and Port-Cartier is one of the friendlier places in Quebec to learn. Roads here are wide, traffic is light, and Route 138 is a well-maintained two-lane highway with few tight corners between town and the wildlife reserve. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, propane, water, dump, and electrical, and you can message them mid-trip with questions. If you'd rather skip the driving entirely, choose a host who delivers and sets up at your campground. Pro tip for first time renting an RV: start with a Class B campervan or small Class C, do a short practice loop near the Promenade du P'tit Quai, then point the wheels north.

What if something goes wrong on the road in the Cote-Nord?

Take a deep breath: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, which is especially reassuring on Route 138 where cell coverage can be patchy past Port-Cartier. If you get a flat, run out of fuel, lock yourself out, or have a mechanical issue, one call can dispatch a tow, tire change, or battery boost to your location. RVezy support is also available around the clock to help coordinate with your host. Pro tip: save the Quebec 511 road info line (dial 511 from any Quebec phone) for live updates on Route 138 conditions, and download offline maps before heading into the Reserve faunique de Port-Cartier-Sept-Iles.
quebec511.info/en/default.aspx

What are the best road trips from Port-Cartier?

An RV road trip from Port-Cartier opens up some of Quebec's most jaw-dropping coastline. Top routes: head 65 km east to Sept-Iles for the Vieux-Quai and Innu cultural sites; continue further northeast to Havre-Saint-Pierre to base-camp for the Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve's iconic limestone monoliths; drive about 240 km west to Baie-Comeau and detour inland to the Manicouagan Reservoir crater; or roll about 450 km southwest to Tadoussac for whales at the mouth of the Saguenay Fjord. Cross-border trips into the US are possible but uncommon from here; trips into Mexico are not permitted on RVezy. Confirm international travel rules directly with your host before booking, and check Quebec 511 for ferry and road conditions.

What kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?

Budgeting fuel for your Port-Cartier RV trip is straightforward once you know the numbers. Class B campervans typically average 14 to 18 L/100 km, Class C motorhomes 22 to 30 L/100 km, and larger Class A or truck-and-trailer combos can hit 30 to 40 L/100 km. Gas in Port-Cartier and along Route 138 generally runs higher than Montreal or Quebec City because of the remote location. A round trip from town up to Camping Lac Walker and back is roughly 80 km, while a Port-Cartier to Havre-Saint-Pierre return is about 580 km. Pro tip: top up in Port-Cartier or Sept-Iles before heading northeast since stations thin out fast past Riviere-au-Tonnerre.

How far in advance should I book a campground near Port-Cartier?

For the best campgrounds near Port-Cartier, aim to book 3 to 6 months ahead for July and August, especially for serviced sites at Camping Lac Walker inside the Reserve faunique de Port-Cartier-Sept-Iles. Sepaq (the Quebec parks agency) opens summer reservations in the winter months through their website, and the most coveted lakefront sites can disappear within days. Private campgrounds like Camping Les Pionniers in town and Camping Plage Pointe-aux-Anglais usually accept bookings 4 to 8 weeks ahead and are more forgiving for last-minute plans. For September shoulder-season trips you can often book just a week or two out. Pro tip: set a reminder for early January to grab Sepaq sites the moment they go live.
sepaq.com/en/reservation/index.dot

What are driving conditions like around Port-Cartier?

Driving in and around Port-Cartier is generally relaxed and beginner-friendly. Route 138 is a paved, two-lane provincial highway with light traffic and posted speeds of 90 km/h between towns, dropping to 50 km/h in Port-Cartier itself. Expect occasional logging trucks, moose-crossing zones (especially at dawn and dusk), and short stretches of frost-heave from harsh winters. Inside the Reserve faunique de Port-Cartier-Sept-Iles, the access road becomes gravel after a few kilometres, so drive 40 to 60 km/h and watch for soft shoulders. Pro tip: check Quebec 511 before you head out, fuel up early, and avoid driving after dark when wildlife is most active.
quebec511.info/en/Carte/Default.aspx

What amenities will I find at Port-Cartier campgrounds?

Most campgrounds around Port-Cartier are well set up for RVs: Camping Les Pionniers offers hookups (30-amp electric, water, sewer) and Wi-Fi near downtown, while Camping Lac Walker inside the Reserve faunique de Port-Cartier-Sept-Iles offers a mix of 30-amp electric-only and rustic sites with potable water taps and shared dump stations. You'll typically find clean comfort stations with hot showers, picnic tables, fire rings, and firewood for sale on site. For dumping and refilling between stops, the Sepaq reception at Lac Walker and the municipal services in Sept-Iles (65 km east) are reliable. Pro tip: pack a 7.6 m (25 ft) drinking-water hose and a 30-amp-to-15-amp adapter, since some boreal sites are spaced generously from the post.
sepaq.com/rf/pos/index.dot?language_id=1

What's inside a typical Port-Cartier RV rental?

RVs on RVezy in Port-Cartier come fully outfitted so you can show up, unpack groceries, and start exploring. Expect a queen or double bed, convertible dinette or bunks (most sleep 4 to 6), a kitchen with three-burner propane stove, fridge/freezer, microwave, sink and cookware, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, plus a furnace (essential here, even summer nights can dip to 8 C) and often air conditioning. Many listings include a generator for off-grid stays in the wildlife reserve, a TV, and increasingly Wi-Fi or cellular boosters, although signal is limited north of town. Every seated passenger needs a seatbelt, so confirm seatbelt count when booking. Pro tip: ask hosts about bug screens, blackfly season runs late May through June.
tc.canada.ca/en/road-transportation/motor-vehicle-safety/seat-belts-child-car-seats-booster-seats

What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?

Hosts in Port-Cartier offer a range of add-ons to customize your trip: bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor mats, generators, bike racks, kayak/canoe carriers (handy for Lake Walker), and propane refills. Delivery and setup is the standout option, with many local hosts delivering within 50 to 100 km of Port-Cartier for a per-kilometre fee. Standard pickup typically happens in the afternoon and dropoff in the late morning, though many hosts are flexible if you message them. Mileage policies vary from 100 km/day to unlimited, so filter or message the host before you book. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a kayak rental and skip towing anything yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Port-Cartier%2C%20Quebec

How does payment and the security deposit work?

Payment for your campervan rental in Port-Cartier is handled entirely through RVezy's secure checkout: you'll pay the rental cost, service fee, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons by credit card when you book, so there's no cash or e-transfer with the host on pickup day. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card a few days before the trip starts, and the amount depends on the RV. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition with the agreed fuel and kilometre count, the hold is released shortly after the trip ends. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, it's the easiest way to avoid any deposit questions later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-works

Can I rent an RV in Port-Cartier in winter?

Winter RV rentals around Port-Cartier are rare but not impossible, since the Cote-Nord winter (November to April) regularly drops well below freezing and most hosts winterize their RVs by mid-October. A handful of four-season Class C motorhomes and truck campers with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces do stay available, and they're a unique way to chase the northern lights along the St. Lawrence. If you go, plan to stay at a winterized site with 30-amp shore power (your furnace will use propane fast) and travel with extra blankets, a snow shovel, and winter tires (mandatory in Quebec from December 1 to March 15). Pro tip: message hosts in October to lock in a winter-ready rig.
