How to get to Banff National Park

The nearest major airport is Calgary International, approximately 144 km (90 miles) south, about a 1.5-hour drive via the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1). Edmonton International Airport is 401 km (250 miles) north, roughly 3.5 hours away. RV travelers should note that RVs over 4,550 kg are restricted on the Icefields Parkway. Snow tires or chains are legally required from November 1 to March 31. The Trans-Canada Highway through the park is generally well-maintained, though some narrow sections exist. No RV parking is available in downtown Banff; park at campgrounds or designated lots.

Best time to visit Banff National Park

July and August offer the warmest weather (22-23°C / 72-73°F), clear skies, and full access to all park attractions, though these are peak season months. For fewer crowds and excellent hiking conditions, visit June, September, or early October when temperatures range from 8-20°C (46-68°F). Winter months (December-February) see heavy snow and road closures, with most campgrounds closed except Tunnel Mountain Village II and Lake Louise. Spring (April-May) is unpredictable with lingering snow and some roads still closed.
