Best time to visit Big Bend National Park

Fall and spring are usually warm and pleasant, while May and June are the hottest months and winters are generally mild with occasional periods of cold. Late October through April is the prime window for RV travel, offering comfortable daytime temperatures and cool nights ideal for desert camping. March and the spring break period bring peak crowds and tight campground reservations, so shoulder months like November, early December, and late January often deliver the best balance of weather and availability. Summer visitors must be prepared for extreme Chihuahuan Desert heat, with lower elevations and river areas typically exceeding 100 degrees by late morning.

How to get to Big Bend National Park

The park is deep in Far West Texas, roughly a 4 to 5 hour drive from Midland/Odessa, about 5 to 6 hours from El Paso, and around 6 to 7 hours from San Antonio. Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF) and El Paso International (ELP) are the closest major airports for fly-and-rent RV travelers. Approach roads cross long stretches of remote desert with limited fuel, so RVers should top off tanks in Alpine, Marathon, or Study Butte before entering. All paved park roads are accessible, but unpaved routes such as Old Maverick Road, Grapevine Hills Road, and Dagger Flat Road are not recommended for larger RVs. The steep, winding Chisos Basin Road has grade and length restrictions (trailers over 20 feet and RVs over 24 feet are not recommended) and is not suitable for large motorhomes or long trailers.
