Pine Canyon Primitive Roadside Campsite 1 offers a true backcountry experience within Big Bend National Park in the Chisos Mountains region of West Texas. Situated along a gravel road off Glenn Spring Road, this primitive site provides a small flat gravel space to park and camp beside your vehicle, surrounded by open desert terrain with sweeping views of the Chisos Mountains, Crown Mountain, and the Sierra del Carmen. Amenities are intentionally minimal — there are no toilets, shade structures, or hookups — making this ideal for self-sufficient adventurers seeking solitude and raw desert scenery. A backcountry permit is required and can be reserved in advance. The site accommodates up to two vehicles (maximum 25 ft.) and six people, though trailers are not recommended due to the rocky, high-clearance road conditions. Hikers will find a 2-mile trail beginning at the end of Pine Canyon Road, climbing through rare ponderosa pine forest — a relic of the last ice age — and oak woodland before reaching a seasonal pouroff waterfall. Generator use is prohibited, preserving the exceptional quiet and dark skies Big Bend National Park is renowned for. This is primitive camping at its most rewarding, deep in the heart of the Texas Chihuahuan Desert.
