Late May through September offers the most reliable RV weather, with warm days for swimming, boating, and fishing on Big Stone Lake. July and August are peak season, so weekend campsite reservations fill early. Early fall, from mid-September into October, brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and prairie color, making it a strong shoulder-season window. Winters are long and cold on the western Minnesota prairie, with limited services for RV travelers.

Big Stone Lake is a 26-mile glacial lake known for walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and panfish. The park has a public boat ramp and lake access, and RVers can tow small boats directly to trailered parking near the launch.
The Meadowbrook unit has a sandy swimming beach on the lake with a picnic area and restrooms. It is the main day-use hub of the park and sits a short walk from the campground loops.
The Bonanza area features short hiking trails through native prairie, oak savanna, and granite outcrops within a Scientific and Natural Area. Trails are best for wildflower viewing in spring and early summer.
Just south of the park, Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge protects wetlands and prairie along the upper Minnesota River. A self-guided auto tour route is accessible to RVs and offers sightings of waterfowl, deer, and bald eagles.
Both the Meadowbrook and Bonanza units have picnic areas with lake and valley views. Overlooks showcase the Minnesota River Valley's glacial geology.
The rural western Minnesota location means low light pollution and wide prairie skies. Campground open areas give RVers simple sky access on clear nights.
The town of Ortonville sits at the south end of Big Stone Lake and offers fuel, propane, groceries, and small-town cafes. It serves as a convenient resupply stop for RV travelers staying at the park.

Big Stone Lake State Park, MN, United States
The park is near Ortonville, Minnesota, on State Highway 7 along the western shore of Big Stone Lake, about 3 hours west of Minneapolis and Saint Paul by I-94 and US-75, and roughly 2.5 hours north of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Approaches are mostly flat prairie highways with no tunnels or mountain passes, though rural two-lane roads, frost heaves, and crosswinds are the main RV considerations. The nearest regional airport is Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD), with Minneapolis-Saint Paul International (MSP) as the primary fly-and-rent hub. Watch for low-clearance bridges and tight turns on county roads leading to the Bonanza unit.
