Best time to visit Blake Island Marine State Park

Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the most reliable ferry service, making it the prime window for RV travelers basing on the mainland. July and August bring peak crowds at the island dock and Tillicum Village, so reservations fill quickly. Shoulder months of May, early June, and late September can be pleasant with fewer visitors but more variable rain. Winter visits are possible but cold, wet, and limited by reduced boat traffic.

Things to do at Blake Island Marine State Park

  • Perimeter Loop Hike Moderate

The perimeter trail circles Blake Island along its forested bluffs and beaches for roughly four miles. Hikers find viewpoints across Puget Sound toward Seattle, the Cascades, and the Olympics. Trailheads start near the main dock and campground.

  • Tillicum Village Cultural Center

Tillicum Village offers Coast Salish cultural experiences including traditional salmon meals and Native dance performances. The longhouse-style venue is a short walk from the ferry dock. It is the main developed attraction on the island.

  • Beachcombing and Tidepooling Easy

Blake Island's five miles of saltwater shoreline provide excellent beachcombing at low tide. Visitors often spot sea stars, crabs, and shorebirds along gravel and sand beaches. The west-side beaches face the Kitsap Peninsula and offer quieter exploration.

  • Boat-In Camping

The park offers standard and primitive campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, and restroom facilities for boat-in visitors. Mooring buoys and a dock serve arriving vessels. Campers should bring potable water and pack out all trash.

  • Wildlife Viewing Easy

Blake Island is home to a resident population of black-tailed deer that roam freely near the campground and trails. Harbor seals, river otters, bald eagles, and great blue herons are regularly seen along the shoreline. Early morning and dusk offer the best viewing.

  • Kayaking and Paddling Strenuous

Blake Island is a designated site on the Cascadia Marine Trail for human and wind-powered watercraft. Paddlers launch from Manchester, Southworth, or Alki Point and cross open water to reach the island. Currents and wakes from commercial traffic require careful planning.

  • Picnicking with Seattle Skyline Views Easy

Day-use picnic areas near the main dock face east toward the Seattle skyline and Mount Rainier. Tables and shelters accommodate groups arriving by ferry or private boat. It is a popular stop for short day trips from the city.

How to get to Blake Island Marine State Park

The park sits in Puget Sound about 8 miles west of downtown Seattle and 3 miles east of Bremerton, reachable only by water. RV travelers typically park on the mainland and board a passenger vessel from Seattle's waterfront, or arrive by private boat from launches at Southworth, Manchester, or Des Moines. Sea-Tac International Airport is about 25 miles southeast for fly-and-rent trips. RVers should note that the Seattle ferry docks have tight urban streets and height-restricted parking garages, so plan mainland camping at parks on the Kitsap Peninsula or in Bremerton where RV parking is easier.
