The best months to visit are late October through April, when humidity drops, mosquitoes ease, and daytime highs sit in a comfortable 70s to low 80s range. Winter and early spring are peak season for snowbirds, so campground reservations fill quickly and should be booked at the earliest window. Shoulder months of May and October offer warm Gulf water with smaller crowds, though afternoon thunderstorms become more frequent. Summer is hot and humid with a higher risk of tropical weather and lightning.

The park's namesake fort is a Spanish-American War era coastal defense battery on Mullet Key that visitors can tour for free. Self-guided paths lead past the mounted 12-inch mortars, one of only a few surviving examples in the country, plus a small Quartermaster Storehouse museum.
North Beach is a long crescent of white sand and shallow tidal lagoons consistently ranked among the top beaches in the United States. Large paved lots near the beach accommodate RVs, and facilities include restrooms, showers, and a concession area.
The park has two lighted fishing piers, a 1,000-foot Gulf Pier and a 500-foot Bay Pier, both open for pier fishing without a separate license. Each pier has a bait shop, snack bar, restrooms, and dedicated RV-accessible parking.
A seven-mile paved multi-use trail loops through the park, connecting the campground, beaches, and fort for walkers, cyclists, and skaters. A separate barrier-free nature trail offers an accessible boardwalk through native coastal habitat.
A 2.25-mile marked canoe and kayak trail winds through mangrove-lined Mullet Key Bayou. Rentals are available at the park concession near the Bay Pier, with parking suitable for tow vehicles and smaller RVs.
A passenger ferry from the Bay Pier area runs to Egmont Key, a wildlife refuge and state park accessible only by boat. Visitors explore the island's historic lighthouse, ruins of Fort Dade, and undeveloped beaches teeming with shorebirds.
Arrowhead is a large shaded picnic area with pavilions, grills, and a paved playground popular with families. Adjacent Paw Playground and Dog Beach provide one of the few off-leash beach areas on Florida's Gulf Coast.
Excellent Campervan Experience We recently rented a campervan to travel to Savannah and Northern Georgia. We had a great time, thanks to the excellent orientation provided by Morgan. We truly had everything we needed, from a French Press to start our days out right to a comfy bed that accommodated two adults comfortably. It was an amazing experience, with all the comforts of home while still being able to connect with nature. Morgan was a phenomenal host and we can't recommend him highly enough!

Fort DeSoto State Park, FL, United States
Fort DeSoto Park sits about 20 minutes (12 miles) southwest of downtown St. Petersburg and roughly 45 minutes (35 miles) from Tampa via I-275 and the Pinellas Bayway. RV travelers should note that the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on I-275 is a high, exposed span with wind advisories for high-profile vehicles, and the Pinellas Bayway includes a toll. The Bayway bridges and park roads are RV-friendly with no tunnels or steep grades. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Tampa International Airport (TPA), with St. Pete-Clearwater International (PIE) as a smaller alternative.
