Late May through early October offers the warmest weather, calm seas for diving and kayaking, and the longest daylight hours for cliffside picnics. July and August are peak season, with warm bay water and busy parking lots on weekends, so weekday visits are easier for larger vehicles. September and early October bring cooler air, lighter crowds, and excellent visibility for shore divers. Winter visits are scenic but exposed, with strong wind off the bay and limited services in town.

Fort Wetherill is one of the most popular shore-diving sites in New England, with two protected coves offering easy water entry from rocky beaches. Divers find kelp, lobsters, crabs, and varied marine life along the rugged underwater terrain. Parking lots near the coves can fit smaller motorhomes and vans.
Walk among the concrete bunkers, gun batteries, and observation posts that remain from the park's coastal-defense era. Fort Wetherill served as a training camp, allowing U.S. soldiers to practice artillery spotting, signaling, and observation. Interpretive remnants are scattered along paved paths suitable for casual walkers. nps.gov/places/fort-wetherill.htm
Open lawns and picnic spots sit above 100-foot granite cliffs with panoramic views of the East Passage, Newport Harbor, and the Pell Bridge. The day-use lots provide easy access for tailgate-style lunches from an RV.
Anglers cast from the rocky shoreline for striped bass, bluefish, tautog, and scup. Strong currents in the East Passage attract larger fish during spring and fall runs. Fishing is permitted from designated shoreline areas only, and a Rhode Island saltwater license is required.
The two coves at Fort Wetherill provide sheltered launches for hand-carry kayaks and paddleboards exploring Mackerel Cove and the rocky Jamestown shoreline. Conditions can shift quickly, so check the marine forecast before paddling. There is no formal boat ramp inside the park.
Short, mostly flat paths trace the headlands and connect the parking areas with the cliff overlooks and fort ruins. Sunrise and sunset light the granite walls and Newport skyline across the bay, making this a popular photography stop.
Beavertail State Park, with its historic lighthouse and rocky coast, lies about 4 miles southwest at the tip of Conanicut Island. The drive pairs naturally with a Fort Wetherill stop and offers more parking suited to larger RVs. Both parks together make a full day on the island.
Awesome experience with the van! Scott was great at promptly answering questions when we had them and the van was just right to road trip and park. Easy to maneuver, great safety features, and convenient for general creature comforts. Really appreciated the experience and would absolutely rent again!

Our camper van rental experience was a pre retirement trial for my wife, our precious lil Yorkie & me. We are new to the van life and this was our first time driving & living out of a camper van. The trip exceeded our expectations on many levels from putting together a list of ideas & “to do’s” for our future custom camper van to the overall positive learning experience thanks to our incredibly insightful and gracious host. Scott was an exceptional host, very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful in explaining the operation of the van inside & out. During our trip, Scott would respond to our text questions promptly, which was very comforting to know he was there for us if needed.

Kevin was great in delivering and setting up the unit and going over the “how to”. It was clean - spacious enough to fit our family of 5 - and ran into no issues on our weekend rental. Highly recommended.

My family had a great time camping with Maria and Kevin’s camper. They were very responsive when we needed help and friendly during drop off and pickup. Will book with them again if we don’t have our own camper next year!

Fort Wetherill State Park, RI, United States
The park sits on the southeast tip of Conanicut Island in Jamestown, about 5 miles from downtown Newport via the Claiborne Pell (Newport) Bridge and roughly 30 miles south of Providence on Route 138. From Boston the drive is about 75 miles, around 1.5 hours, and from Hartford about 90 miles. RV drivers should note that the Pell Bridge has a posted height limit and is exposed to high crosswinds, the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge restricts heavy commercial vehicles, and the narrow park road and small loop lots near the cliffs are tight for rigs over about 25 feet. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is T.F. Green International Airport in Warwick, about 30 miles north.
