Late May through September is generally the best window for RV travel, with warm days suited to boating, paddling, and hiking on open prairie trails. July and August bring the warmest weather and the busiest campground use, so reservations are recommended in peak summer. September and October are excellent shoulder-season choices thanks to cooler temperatures, fall color in the river bottoms, and massive waterfowl migrations at the adjoining wildlife area. Winters are cold and windy on the prairie, and many campground services are reduced or closed.

Lac qui Parle Lake is a long, shallow impoundment of the Minnesota River that offers boating, kayaking, and canoeing right from the park. A public boat launch within the park provides direct water access, and calm backwater areas are well suited to paddlers.
The park is a popular fishing destination for walleye, northern pike, crappie, and catfish. Shore fishing is available along several points in the park, and boat anglers use the on-site ramp to reach open water.
The park borders a major wildlife management area known for enormous concentrations of migrating Canada geese and other waterfowl in spring and fall. Bald eagles, pelicans, and prairie songbirds are regularly seen from park trails and overlooks.
The park has several miles of hiking trails that loop through prairie, oak savanna, and bottomland forest along the river. Trails are relatively flat and family-friendly, with access from the campground and picnic areas.
The historic Lac qui Parle Mission, a reconstructed 19th-century Dakota mission chapel, sits just outside the park. It offers a short, informative stop for travelers interested in the region's Dakota and missionary history.
The park includes a designated swimming area on the lake and day-use picnic grounds with shelters. Picnic areas have vehicle access suitable for parking an RV or tow vehicle nearby.
In winter, the park's trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when snow conditions allow. The campground is typically closed in winter, so this is a day-use activity for RV travelers passing through.
