Best time to visit Myakka River State Park

Late fall through early spring, roughly November to March, is the best window for RV travel to Myakka River State Park. Cooler, drier weather keeps humidity and mosquitoes down, wildlife viewing peaks as birds concentrate along shrinking water, and campsite demand is highest, so early reservations are essential. Shoulder months like October and April are warmer but quieter. Summer brings heat, afternoon thunderstorms, and high water that can flood low-lying trails and roads.

Things to do at Myakka River State Park

  • Myakka Canopy Walkway Easy

The Myakka Canopy Walkway is a suspended boardwalk and 74-foot tower that lets visitors walk through the treetops of an oak and palm hammock. The short, flat access trail is family friendly, and the adjacent parking area handles standard tow vehicles.

  • Birdwalk at Upper Myakka Lake Easy
    RV parking available

The Birdwalk is a long boardwalk that extends into the wetland edge of Upper Myakka Lake, offering open views of wading birds, alligators, and waterfowl. It is one of the park's most productive wildlife viewing spots, especially at sunrise and sunset.

  • Myakka River Paddling Easy
    RV parking available

Paddling the Wild and Scenic Myakka River is a signature way to explore the park. Kayaks and canoes can be launched from the main boat ramp near Upper Myakka Lake, with rentals available at the concession.

  • Park Drive Wildlife Loop Easy
    RV parking available

The seven-mile main park drive is a self-guided route for spotting deer, wild turkeys, sandhill cranes, and alligators from pull-offs. Driving is slow and RV friendly on the paved sections, though the loop narrows past the weir.

  • Myakka Outpost Tram and Boat Tours Easy
    RV parking available

Guided tram safaris roll across the open prairie while large capacity airboats tour Upper Myakka Lake. Both depart from the Myakka Outpost near the main concession and are a good option for visitors with limited mobility.

  • Bee Island and Deep Hole Hikes Moderate
    RV parking available

The park's backcountry trail system offers longer hikes across pine flatwoods and prairie, including the permit-only Deep Hole trek to a gator-rich sinkhole on the lower Myakka. Hikers should carry water, as shade is limited and summer temperatures are extreme.

  • Fishing on Upper and Lower Myakka Lakes Easy
    RV parking available

Anglers can fish for largemouth bass, bluegill, and catfish from the bank, the fishing pier, or a small boat. A Florida freshwater fishing license is required for visitors 16 and older.

From Fort Myers the drive is about 1 hour 30 minutes north on I-75. Access roads are flat, paved, and free of tunnels or mountain grades, making the approach straightforward for large motorhomes and towables, though the inner park drive is narrow with low-hanging oak branches that demand caution for tall Class A rigs.
