Pachaug State Forest, CT, United States
Pachaug State Forest is centered near Voluntown in southeastern Connecticut, roughly 45 minutes (about 35 miles) from Providence, Rhode Island, about one hour (45 miles) from Hartford, and around 2.5 hours from Boston or New York City. Most RV travelers approach via Interstate 395 and connect to Routes 138, 49, or 165, all of which are rural two-lane state highways with tight shoulders, low-clearance tree canopies, and occasional sharp bends. There are no major tunnels or mountain passes, but large Class A motorhomes should take the forest's interior dirt roads slowly and check clearance at campground loops. T. F. Green International Airport in Providence is the closest major fly-and-rent option.
Late May through mid-October is the best window for RV travel, when the state campgrounds are open and the weather is warm enough for swimming, paddling, and hiking. September and early October bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and southern New England fall foliage, which is ideal for shoulder-season trips. July and August are the busiest months and can be humid with afternoon thunderstorms. Winter visits are limited to day use, since campgrounds close and forest roads are not plowed.

Mount Misery is a short, rocky hike to one of the highest points in Pachaug State Forest, with views over the surrounding woodlands. The trail is a popular quick out-and-back from the Mount Misery Campground area. Trailhead parking can accommodate passenger vehicles and smaller RVs.
Green Falls Pond is a scenic pond in the Voluntown block of the forest with a rustic campground, swimming, and non-motorized boating. Hiking loops connect to the Narragansett Trail along the shoreline. The day-use lot has space for vehicles with trailers.
The Rhododendron Sanctuary is a short boardwalk trail through a National Natural Landmark wetland containing native great laurel rhododendron. Blooms typically peak in early to mid July. The flat path is suitable for most visitors and the parking area accommodates standard vehicles.
The Pachaug Trail is a long-distance blue-blazed hiking trail maintained by the Connecticut Forest & Park Association that traverses the forest for more than 20 miles. Hikers can pick up the trail from several trailheads inside the state forest for day hikes of varying length. Multiple access points have gravel parking lots.
Beachdale Pond offers a small boat launch and shoreline fishing just inside the main forest entrance off Route 49 in Voluntown. The pond is stocked and popular for bass, pickerel, and panfish. A paved lot near the launch makes it accessible for tow vehicles.
Pachaug has an extensive network of multi-use forest roads and trails open to mountain bikes and horses in addition to hikers. Riders use the woods roads in the Chapman and Voluntown blocks for long loop rides. Trailered horse riders use designated parking areas near select trailheads.
Canoeists and kayakers can paddle sections of the Pachaug River and connected ponds within the forest. Put-ins at Beachdale Pond and other pullouts provide flatwater paddling suitable for families. Motorized boats are restricted on most of the smaller waters.
The network of paved and gravel forest roads through Pachaug makes for a scenic autumn drive past mixed oak, maple, and pine stands. Route 49, which borders the forest, is a designated Connecticut scenic road. Pullouts allow drivers to stop for photos, though larger RVs should stick to the paved through-roads.
Awesome experience with the van! Scott was great at promptly answering questions when we had them and the van was just right to road trip and park. Easy to maneuver, great safety features, and convenient for general creature comforts. Really appreciated the experience and would absolutely rent again!

Our camper van rental experience was a pre retirement trial for my wife, our precious lil Yorkie & me. We are new to the van life and this was our first time driving & living out of a camper van. The trip exceeded our expectations on many levels from putting together a list of ideas & “to do’s” for our future custom camper van to the overall positive learning experience thanks to our incredibly insightful and gracious host. Scott was an exceptional host, very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful in explaining the operation of the van inside & out. During our trip, Scott would respond to our text questions promptly, which was very comforting to know he was there for us if needed.
