Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the calmest seas for boat or kayak crossings from Vancouver Island, making it the peak window for RV-based trips to the region. May, early June, and September are good shoulder options with fewer boaters and cooler paddling conditions. Particularly impressive in June and early July are the large areas seen from the loop trail that are covered by Pipsissewa, a low-growing evergreen plant with leathery, shiny leaves and pink flowers. Winter trips are rare due to unsettled marine weather on the Strait of Georgia.

Pirates Cove provides a protected anchorage popular with boaters cruising the southern Gulf Islands. The park offers a sheltered anchorage with stern tie pins, as well as two dinghy docks, one on either side of the cove. bcparks.ca/pirates-cove-marine-park/
The park is a favorite waypoint for ocean kayakers exploring the southern Gulf Islands. Paddlers use Pirates Cove as a destination area or a rest stop prior to traveling further north or south through the Gulf Islands, and the sheltered waters around the Gulf Islands make it a good spot for paddlers of all abilities. bcparks.ca/pirates-cove-marine-park/
Pirates Cove Marine Provincial Park offers 6 walk-in campsites with tent pads, located just above the south beach. Fees for overnight camping apply year-round and are payable at self-registration vaults located near the water pump or through the Backcountry Registration System. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/pirates/
A short loop trail winds through forest along the shoreline with chances to see wildlife. River otters frequent the park and are most easily seen in the early morning, and a stroll around the Pylades Trail will likely result in a sighting or two. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/pirates/
The sandy south-facing beach is the spot for a warm-weather swim. There is no designated swimming area at this park, however swimming occurs on the sandy south beach, and there are no lifeguards on duty at provincial parks. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/pirates/
Surrounding waters offer excellent marine wildlife viewing throughout the year. Common marine mammals include harbour seals year-round and Steller's and California sea lions from late August through mid-May, and the fortunate may catch glimpses of harbour porpoises or orcas, as well as Gray and Humpback whales in summer. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/pirates/
The waters around the park support saltwater fishing for those with the correct licence. Anyone fishing in British Columbia must have an appropriate licence. bcparks.ca/pirates-cove-marine-park/
The park's coastline features sculpted sandstone and rich intertidal life. Unusual sandstone rock formations line the shoreline at Pirates Cove, and the intertidal area is abundant with a variety of shellfish and marine life. bcparks.ca/pirates-cove-marine-park/

Pirates Cove Marine Provincial Park, BC, Canada
The park has no road access. RV travelers drive to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, about 110 km (roughly 2 hours) north of Victoria via Highway 1, or arrive by BC Ferries from Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay near Vancouver, then cross to De Courcy Island by private boat, water taxi, or kayak. The park is accessible by boat through Dodd Narrows from Nanaimo, up through the Gulf Islands from Victoria, and via Gabriola Passage from Vancouver. Highway 1 on Vancouver Island is RV-friendly with no major tunnels or steep mountain passes, and Nanaimo Airport (YCD) is the nearest option for fly-and-rent trips.
