Best time to visit Tettegouche State Park

Spring can be muddy with lingering ice on trails, and winter visits are possible for day use and limited camping, but snow and ice on access roads are a factor for larger rigs.

High Falls is a roughly 70-foot waterfall on the Baptism River and the tallest waterfall located entirely within Minnesota. The route from the main trailhead is about 1.5 miles each way and includes a suspension bridge over the river. RV parking is available at the main trailhead lot off Highway 61.

  • Shovel Point and Palisade Head overlooks Easy
    RV parking available

Shovel Point is a dramatic volcanic cliff overlook on Lake Superior reached by a short trail from the visitor center, offering sweeping views of the Sawtooth shoreline. Nearby Palisade Head provides additional cliff-top views accessed by a short paved road. The visitor center lot accommodates RVs; the Palisade Head spur is narrow and better suited to smaller rigs.

  • Baptism River Trail to Two Step Falls Easy
    RV parking available

Two Step Falls is a multi-tier cascade on the Baptism River downstream of High Falls, reached by a short hike with stone stairs. The round trip from the main trailhead runs about 1 mile. Good option for visitors who want a shorter waterfall hike from the same RV-accessible lot.

  • Superior Hiking Trail through Tettegouche Strenuous

The Superior Hiking Trail cuts through the park and connects ridgelines, inland lakes, and Lake Superior overlooks. Day hikers can sample sections out and back from park trailheads without committing to a long backpack. Trail surface is rocky and rooted in places.

  • Inland lakes paddling at Mic Mac and Nipisiquit Moderate

Tettegouche has four backcountry inland lakes where canoes and kayaks can be rented or carried in for quiet paddling. The lakes sit in a glacially carved basin ringed by cliffs and forest. Access involves a hike-in or portage from designated trailheads.

  • Lake Superior shoreline and cobblestone beach Easy
    RV parking available

The park's Lake Superior shoreline features a cobblestone beach at the mouth of the Baptism River plus rocky coves ideal for rockhounding and sunset watching. A short walk from the trail center leads to the shore. Parking at the trail center fits most RVs.

  • Mount Baldy and Mount Trudee hikes Strenuous

Mount Baldy and Mount Trudee are interior summits offering panoramic views of the Sawtooth Mountains and Lake Superior. Expect steep, rocky climbs with switchbacks and exposed ledges. Best tackled in dry conditions with proper footwear.
