The Delta is built for water-based recreation. Brannan Island State Recreation Area has a ten-lane boat launch ramp, swimming areas, picnic spots, and a fishing pier on Seven Mile Slough, plus paved roads that work well for kids on bikes. Fishing is the headline draw: striped bass, black bass, sturgeon, catfish, crappie, and bluegill all run through the surrounding sloughs and rivers, and spring is prime time for stripers moving upriver to spawn. Boaters, kayakers, and windsurfers use the launch ramps at Delta Marina Yacht Harbor and the private resorts to reach Frank's Tract, Steamboat Slough, and Three Mile Slough. On land, families can drive the levee roads to historic Delta towns like Isleton and Locke, or stop at Sandy Beach County Park on the Rio Vista waterfront.

The Delta has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Summer highs commonly sit in the upper 80s to low 90s and can push past 100 during heat waves, though the afternoon Delta breeze typically takes the edge off and overnight lows drop into the upper 50s. This is peak boating, fishing, and family-camping season, and weekend sites at Brannan Island and the private resorts fill up well in advance. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows, with daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s and far fewer mosquitoes than midsummer. Striped bass fishing peaks in April and May as fish move upriver, and again in early fall. Winter is the wet season, with most of the year's rain falling between November and March; Brannan Island stays open year-round, but from mid-October through mid-May only some campsites are active, with portions of the park operating first-come, first-served while peak-season inventory is fully reservable.

Expect flat Delta terrain, levee roads, and sites that are often within steps of the water. At Brannan Island, family sites in the Willow and Cottonwood loops include a fire ring and picnic table on primitive sites without hookups, while the Olympic Loop offers about a dozen RV sites with water and 50-amp electric (no sewer); a dump station is available on site. Restrooms have flush toilets and showers. Dogs are allowed on leash in campsites and on paved roads but not on trails or beaches. Wind picks up most afternoons, so awnings and canopies should be staked or stowed. Cell coverage is generally usable but can be patchy on the back-island parks. Mosquitoes can be active near dusk in warmer months, especially after high tides.
