The beach is the headline attraction. Port Hueneme has a south-facing sand beach popular for surfing, and the pier draws anglers and walkers. Just south, Point Mugu State Park has over 70 miles of hiking trails and includes the pinnacles of the Boney Mountains State Wilderness Area, with canyon and ridge routes accessible from the Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp trailhead. Beach activities include swimming, surfing, fishing, and sunbathing. Sycamore Canyon is known for mountain biking, and wildlife viewing turns up dolphins, deer, coyotes, pelicans, and shorebirds. During gray whale migration, Point Mugu is a good spot for whale watching. Surf fishing is productive along Emma Wood State Beach, and a coastal bike path links Emma Wood with Ventura's waterfront.

Port Hueneme runs on a Mediterranean schedule: cool, damp winters and warm, dry summers. Summers are comfortable, arid, and clear, while winters are cool, wet, and partly cloudy. Most of the annual precipitation falls between December and February, and storms during the wet season can bring high surf that affects beach campgrounds. High tides may close the Emma Wood campground at any time, so winter and early-spring visitors should keep a backup plan. Summer is peak season. State park sites along the coast book out fast for weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Reservations for Point Mugu State Park are highly recommended, especially for summer weekends and holidays. Spring and fall are quieter, with mild days, lower demand, and good wildlife viewing including gray whale migration off the coast. Marine layer fog is common from late spring into early summer, cooling mornings even when inland valleys are hot. Thornhill Broome and Sycamore Canyon fill up nearly every weekend year-round, so off-season weekdays are the easiest time to land a site.

Expect a working coastline, not a resort strip. Highway 101 and the Union Pacific rail line run close to several beach campgrounds. Railroad tracks and Highway 101 are adjacent to the Emma Wood campground, which can be noisy. Thornhill Broome Family Camp sits directly along PCH, with traffic audible at night. State park beach sites are primitive. Thornhill Broome's pet-friendly tent and RV sites have picnic tables, fire pits, and vault toilets, but the campground has no hookups or showers. There is little or no shade at the beach campgrounds, so smaller rigs and tent campers should bring a canopy. Private parks in Ventura and Oxnard fill the gap with full hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Dogs are generally welcome in campgrounds but restricted on park trails and most beaches, so check rules at each site before arrival.
