Campgrounds and RV parks near Oakville, CT

The area combines quiet forest recreation with family attractions. Black Rock State Park is bisected by the Connecticut Forest and Parks Association's Mattatuck Trail and home to a network of intersecting trails and footpaths, with options from 30-minute strolls to all-day treks. The park has a swimming beach at Black Rock Pond and, as one of Connecticut's 13 designated trout parks, is regularly restocked throughout the spring and fall, making it a family-friendly angling destination. Families traveling with kids often pair a stay with a day at Lake Compounce in Bristol, home to Crocodile Cove, the largest water park in Connecticut. Nearby Litchfield adds hiking around White Memorial's conservation lands, and the town of Thomaston offers restaurants, markets, and small shops within a short drive of Oakville.

Camping in the Oakville area is a warm-season activity. Most private and state campgrounds open in spring and close by mid-fall. At Black Rock State Park the 2026 season opens Friday, May 22 and closes Monday, October 12 at noon. Bathrooms are not available at this campground until Memorial Day, and portable toilets are available prior to Memorial Day. Private parks run a similar arc. Lake Compounce Campground opens May 1 and stays open through late October. The White Memorial season at Point Folly begins in early May and ends on Columbus Day, while Windmill Hill is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Branch Brook operates on a warm-season schedule with many long-term seasonal campers, and shorter-stay availability is best mid-week. Summer weekends are the busiest window, driven by families visiting the amusement park and lakes. Shoulder-season trips in May, September, and early October usually see cooler nights, fewer crowds, and more weekend availability, though some services scale back. After Labor Day, campsites at Black Rock are available for advance reservations on Friday and Saturday nights, and are available to walk-ins on Sunday through Thursday nights, and cabins are not available after Labor Day.

At Branch Brook Campground, guests have access to 24 hour bathrooms and showers, a self serve laundromat, and a propane filling station. At Bear Creek, bathrooms and shower facilities are clean and spacious, with free showers available, and the campground provides electric and water hookups as well as cable TV connections; there is no sewer hookup at individual sites, but a dump station is available, and the campground also features a camp store. State-park camping is more rustic. Bringing firewood into Connecticut state campgrounds from other states is prohibited, and campers should store food, hygiene items, and trash securely because bears, deer, raccoons, and other wildlife share the area. At Windmill Hill, no vehicles larger than a standard sized van or pickup are allowed in the campground, and it is restricted to tent camping. Larger RV rentals should target Branch Brook, Gentile's, or Bear Creek.
