Kealakekua Bay is the headline stop, with snorkeling among reef fish and spinner dolphins and a monument marking the site where Captain Cook was killed. Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, just south, preserves a place of refuge with reconstructed temple platforms and tide pools that work well for families. Ho'okena Beach Park offers a gray-sand cove with sea turtles, restrooms, and a concession stand selling ice, hot food, cold drinks, snacks, and reef-safe sunscreen. Coffee farms along the Mamalahoa Highway run tours and tastings, and the drive south leads to Miloli'i, a traditional fishing village with a shoreline park. Day trips reach South Point, Papakolea green sand beach, Punalu'u black sand beach, and the summit area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park within a few hours.

High-elevation stops such as Hawaii Volcanoes National Park run noticeably cooler and wetter than the coast.

Roads on the west side of the Big Island are paved but narrow, with tight shoulders and steep grades between the coast and the upcountry coffee belt. Larger Class A rigs can be tricky on side roads down to beach parks; smaller Class C, van, and truck campers handle these routes more easily. Hookups are rare. Many county beach parks offer cold showers and restrooms but no power at the site, and several county parks including Miloli'i, Kapa'a, and Kiholo have no potable water.
