Campgrounds and RV parks near Honaunau-Napoopoo, HI

The main draw is Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park. The Royal Grounds were once reserved for high chiefs, and visitors can take a self-guided walk through the coastal gardens or join a ranger-led talk, then step into the puʻuhonua itself where carved wooden kiʻi statues stand watch over the reconstructed Hale o Keawe temple. The 1871 Trail follows an old coastal route from the park and travels through lava fields and cultural sites along the shoreline south of Hōnaunau Bay. Water activities center on Two Step, adjacent to the park. It is one of the most popular snorkeling spots on the island, with lava ledges providing easy entry, coral reefs, schools of yellow tangs, parrotfish, and occasional sea turtles. Kealakekua Bay to the north offers kayaking and dolphin viewing. Other nearby stops include St. Benedict's Painted Church, Kona coffee farms along the mauka belt road, and Hoʻokena Beach for swimming and picnicking.

The Kona side of the Big Island stays warm year-round with modest seasonal swings. Kailua-Kona is the one place in Hawaiʻi where summer is wetter than winter, the opposite of everywhere else in the islands; it sits on the dry leeward coast, the sun-protected western side of the Big Island, while Hilo across the island takes the rain. Temperatures hold between 70 and 80°F all year, and annual rainfall runs around 27 inches at the coast. Late spring through early fall is the busiest travel window, matching school breaks and warmer nights. Most rain comes in the late afternoon or early evening rather than all day, so a wet forecast rarely ruins a morning, and the best shot at clear sky is the morning, roughly 8 to 10 am, after which clouds build fast and by 2 pm there is about an 80 percent chance of cloud cover. Winter and early spring bring cooler nights and slightly higher coastal rainfall, along with humpback whale season offshore. Central Pacific hurricane season runs June through November, and while direct hits are uncommon, tropical activity can affect travel plans and campground access in late summer and fall.

Hawaii Island has few full-service RV parks by mainland standards, and Honaunau-Napoopoo is a rural coastal community without big-box hookups nearby. Expect narrow, winding roads off Highway 11, steep grades between the coast and upland farms, and limited turnaround space at beach parks. Class B vans and smaller Class C rigs handle the roads best. Coastal county parks are generally tent-oriented with basic restrooms, and vehicles including camper vans must stay in the designated parking lot, and sleeping inside a vehicle or setting up a rooftop tent in the lot is not officially allowed. Private farm stays on the Mauna Loa slopes often accommodate vans and small RVs on level pads, sometimes with potable water and power, but seldom with sewer hookups. Plan dump-station stops in the greater Kona area. Come prepared for strong sun, sudden afternoon showers, and spotty cell service in the backcountry. Use reef-safe sunscreen at snorkel sites, and secure food and gear at night.
