From a Waipio base, the North Shore is the main draw. Camp Mokule‘ia sits on the north shore of Oahu, only steps from warm Hawaiian waters where dolphins and sea turtles may be spotted, and the camp offers snorkeling and hiking through a tropical forest preserve. Haleiwa town is nearby for supplies, shave ice, and surf watching in winter. On the Windward side, state and county parks add hiking and cultural sites. Kualoa Regional Park offers Koolau mountain views and shoreline camping, and Ahupuaa O Kahana State Park adds valley trails and a historic fishpond. In Waipio itself, Central Oahu Regional Park is a large outdoor sports complex with facilities for tennis, baseball, softball, soccer, archery, and swimming, which is useful for families between coastal trips.

Oahu has two broad seasons rather than four. Summer, roughly May through October, is warmer, drier, and the busiest camping stretch, with calm south and leeward shores. Winter, November through April, brings more rain and much larger north-shore surf, which shifts snorkel and swim plans to south-facing beaches. Rainfall is highly localized. Central and leeward Oahu, including Waipio, are relatively dry, while windward and mountain areas can see frequent showers year-round. The Keawa'ula section of Ka'ena Point State Park has been closed due to road repairs from recent Kona Low storms, and the Mokule‘ia vehicle access road has reopened to valid permit holders with some previously accessible roads now closed. Hurricane season runs June through November, though direct hits on Oahu are rare. Booking well ahead is critical for summer weekends, spring break, and holiday periods, when both state and city sites fill quickly.

Visitors should plan around Oahu's limited hookup infrastructure. Most public campgrounds are tent-oriented, with basic restrooms, cold showers, and picnic tables rather than full RV pads. Hawaii state park campgrounds are not set up for camping in vehicles, including campers, vans, and trailers, and sleeping in vehicles in campground parking lots is not allowed. Campfires and bonfires are illegal on all public beaches and parks in Hawaii, and cooking is limited to above-ground barbecue grills at least 12 inches off the ground. At Camp Mokule‘ia, amenities include campfire pits, cold water sinks, and a hot water shower house, and tent platforms and tentalos are available for those who want a step above a bare site. Print permits in advance, carry them on site, and expect windy, sandy conditions on the coast.
