Campgrounds near Newark, New York
Newark sits in Wayne County along the Erie Canal, roughly 30 miles east of Rochester and on the northern edge of the Finger Lakes region. The village is a stop on the Erie Canal Bike Trail at mile marker 128, which puts it directly on the Empire State Trail corridor. The location makes it a practical base for RV travelers combining canal-town stops, Finger Lakes wineries, and Lake Ontario day trips.
Private RV parks handle most overnight demand in the immediate area. Whispering Winds RV and Fun Center and Nor-Win Farm and Campsite lie closest to the village, while Cheerful Valley Campgrounds and Junius Ponds Cabins & Campground sit a short drive east toward Phelps and Waterloo. Twilight on the Erie RV Resort offers canal-side sites for travelers who want water views from the rig.
For state-park camping, RVers typically drive south to the Finger Lakes cluster around Sampson, Cayuga Lake, and Watkins Glen, or west toward Letchworth. Options near Newark range from wooded private parks to canal-front sites, with the surrounding area sitting at roughly 450 feet elevation.
Things to do near Newark
The Erie Canalway Trail runs directly through town. Newark's local section extends about 1.5 miles from T. Spencer Knight Park west to Stebbins Road, on an 8 to 10 foot wide path with canal views along most of the route. The trail is flat and stroller-friendly, useful for families riding out from a campground for the afternoon.
Day trips fan out in every direction. Sampson State Park on Seneca Lake, the Watkins Glen gorge trail, and the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge are all within roughly an hour's drive. The Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake wine trails sit just to the south, and the Port of Newark itself has a welcome center with free showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and a pump-out station for boaters.
On-site amenities at the private parks near Newark commonly include swimming pools, fishing ponds, and scheduled family activities.

The camping season in the Newark area is short and predictable. Most private campgrounds operate roughly from mid-April through October, with a few staying open a bit longer on either end when weather cooperates. Spring can be muddy after snowmelt but brings wildflowers and quieter sites before the summer rush.
Canal-side primitive camping follows the navigation calendar rather than the calendar year. The New York State Canal Corporation operates biker-hiker-boater sites along the Canalway Trail and canal waterways during the navigation season, generally May through October. The nearest of these to Newark is at Lock E28B, just east of T. Spencer Knight Park, and it is primitive with only a porta-john on site.
Summer weekends fill fastest, particularly around July 4 and Labor Day. Fall brings foliage traffic through the Finger Lakes and wine-trail crowds in September and October. Winter camping in this part of upstate is largely a non-starter for RV travelers: most private parks close, water is shut off, and lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario is a regular feature.

How to book
Private campgrounds near Newark book directly through their own websites or by phone. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day should be reserved several weeks out, and holiday weekends often fill by early spring. Many of these parks carry a high share of seasonal residents, so the transient inventory available to short-stay RVers is smaller than the total site count suggests.
For New York state parks in the surrounding Finger Lakes and Genesee regions, reservations go through the ReserveAmerica portal operated for New York State Parks. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites. The ReserveAmerica call center is 1-800-456-2267.
Canal Corporation biker-hiker-boater sites along the canal are primitive and typically require advance contact with the local village or Canal Corporation to confirm access.
What to expect on arrival
Sites in this area range from full-hookup pull-throughs at commercial parks to gravel back-ins at state campgrounds with electric only. Bring leveling blocks and a heavy-duty extension cord: reviewers frequently note unlevel sites at several private parks in the region, and electric pedestal placement at state loops can be inconsistent.
Cell coverage varies. Major carriers generally work in and around Newark itself, but pockets along the canal and in wooded state-park loops can drop to a bar or none. Download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving town.
Firewood must be sourced locally. New York enforces a do-not-move-firewood rule to protect forests from invasive pests, so plan to buy on-site or within about 50 miles of the campground.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Newark, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Newark, NY?
RV rental in Newark, NY is genuinely affordable compared to big-city markets like NYC or Boston. You'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches running $250 to $400 per night. For a cheap RV rental in Newark, look at pop-up campers or older travel trailers, which often dip under $100/night midweek. Pro tip: book a Sunday-to-Thursday trip in late September to ride out the Finger Lakes wine harvest season at shoulder pricing, then add an Erie Canalway Trail bike ride right from the Port of Newark to round out your stay.
waynecountytourism.com/where-to-stay/campgrounds/What license do I need to rent an RV in Newark, NY?
Good news: a standard New York State driver's license (Class D) is all you need to drive any RV available on RVezy in Newark. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required, even for a 32-foot Class A motorhome. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform when you book, so there is no paperwork at pickup. Visiting from overseas? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit before you fly in. Most first time renters in Newark are surprised how quickly they are rolling toward the Erie Canal towpath.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Newark booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pull away. During checkout you choose the protection tier that fits your trip (you select it, not the host), with coverage options for accidental damage to the RV. That means a small scrape backing into a site at Cheerful Valley Campground or a chipped windshield on Route 31 will not derail your Finger Lakes getaway. Paired with RVezy customer support, it is the kind of peace of mind that makes a first time RV trip feel relaxed instead of risky.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Newark RV trip?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out you cancel and the circumstances. If your plans shift, open your trip in the RVezy dashboard and the support team will walk you through your options. Pro tip: book early for summer Erie Canal festivals in Newark, you will get the best rigs and still have flexibility built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Newark?
Absolutely. Pet-friendly RV rental in Newark is easy to find: toggle the Pet Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see listings whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Many Wayne County hosts are pet parents themselves and stock the RV with a tie-out and a water bowl. On the road, your pup will love the Erie Canalway Trail through T. Spencer Knight Park, the open fields at Whispering Winds Campground in Newark, and the leashed trails at Chimney Bluffs State Park about 30 minutes north. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size notes.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Newark?
Yes, RV delivery in Newark is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow the RV directly to Whispering Winds Campground, Cheerful Valley Campground in Hamlin, or Junius Ponds Cabins & Campground in Phelps, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero stress about towing or backing in. Filter listings by Delivery, then message the host with your campground name and dates. It's the easiest way to enjoy RV camping in Newark without ever getting behind the wheel of a big rig.
parks.ny.gov/camping/How far can I drive on a Newark RV rental?
You've got plenty of range for a classic Newark RV trip. Hosts set their own mileage policies, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per day and some featuring RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer Finger Lakes loop. From Newark, you're 40 minutes to Rochester, about 90 minutes to Niagara Falls, roughly 1 hour to Syracuse, and around 2.5 hours to the Adirondacks. Watkins Glen State Park is just over an hour south. Check the mileage section of each listing before booking, and if you're planning a big loop, message the host: extra miles can usually be pre-purchased at a discount.
dot.ny.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Newark, NY?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Newark include Whispering Winds Campground right in Newark on Country Club Drive (full hookups, family-run), Cheerful Valley Campground in Phelps (15 minutes south, with a pool and pond), Junius Ponds Cabins & Campground just off I-90 in Phelps, Lake Bluff Campground in Wolcott on Lake Ontario (about 35 minutes north, next to Chimney Bluffs State Park), and Cayuga Lake State Park Campground about 45 minutes south for classic Finger Lakes swimming. Pro tip: state park sites book through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance, so lock in summer weekends early.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Newark, NY?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Newark, with daytime highs from 70 to 85F (21 to 29C) and cool, sleepable nights. July and August are warmest and busiest with Erie Canal festivals like Music on the Erie. Our local favorite, though, is late September through mid-October: Finger Lakes wine harvest is on, fall foliage explodes across Wayne County, and campsite prices drop. Winter rentals (December to March) are limited because lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario can dump several feet, but a few four-season hosts on RVezy offer winterized rigs for ice-fishing trips and cozy stargazing nights.
weather.gov/buf/I'm first time renting an RV. Will I be okay driving in Newark?
You'll do great. Newark is a small Erie Canal village with low traffic, 25-35 mph village streets, and easy two-lane highways like NY-31 and NY-88 that are very RV-friendly. Your host gives a full pickup walkthrough covering propane, water, slides, leveling, and the dump system, so nothing's left to guess. If you'd rather skip the drive entirely on your first RV road trip from Newark, choose a host who offers delivery and setup at your campground. Pro tip: practice a couple of right-hand turns in the empty Wayne County Fairgrounds lot on Route 31 before heading to the Thruway.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-manuals-and-guidesWhat happens if something breaks down on my RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy rental in Newark includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flats, lockouts, jump-starts, and towing whether you are parked at Whispering Winds or rolling down I-90 toward Buffalo. One call connects you with a dispatcher who sends help to your location. Your host is also a quick text away for questions like resetting the GFCI or relighting the water heater. With strong cell coverage across Wayne County and most of the Finger Lakes, help is always reachable. Save the roadside number in your phone at pickup and you are set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Newark RV rental into Canada or other states?
Many hosts welcome cross-border and interstate travel, you just need to confirm before booking. Niagara Falls, Ontario is only about 2 hours from Newark via I-90 and the Peace Bridge, making Canada a popular add-on. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular interstate routes from Newark include Cape Cod (about 7 hours east), the White Mountains of New Hampshire (around 8 hours), and the Outer Banks (roughly 12 hours south). Message the host through the listing with your full itinerary, bring your passport for the Canada crossing, and you're road-trip ready.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan your budget around realistic numbers. Class B campervans get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes around 8-12 MPG, Class A coaches 6-10 MPG, and a truck-and-travel-trailer combo typically 10-14 MPG. Gas prices in Wayne County usually run about $0.10-$0.20 below the New York State average, with the most affordable stations along NY-31 in Newark, Lyons, and Palmyra. For a 4-day, 400-mile Finger Lakes loop in a Class C, budget roughly $150-$200 for fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Newark before heading onto the Thruway, where I-90 service plaza prices tend to be noticeably higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Newark?
Sooner is better, especially for summer. New York State Park campgrounds (like Cayuga Lake, Fair Haven Beach, and Sampson) open reservations 9 months ahead through ReserveAmerica, and prime July/August weekends book out within days. Private parks like Whispering Winds and Cheerful Valley typically open the same calendar year and you can usually grab a site 4-6 weeks out, even in summer. For fall foliage weekends in late September and early October, book 2-3 months ahead. Shoulder-season midweek stays at Junius Ponds in Phelps are often available just a few days out, perfect for a spontaneous Erie Canal getaway.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Newark and the Finger Lakes?
Driving around Newark is one of the easiest RV experiences in the Northeast. Main routes like NY-31, NY-88, and US-20 are flat, well-paved, and lightly trafficked compared to downstate. The New York State Thruway (I-90) is a toll road, so grab an E-ZPass-equipped rig or be ready to pay by mail. Watch for sudden lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Ontario from November through March and slow down on the rolling hills approaching Bristol Mountain. Avoid downtown Rochester rush hour (7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. on I-490). Otherwise, your campervan rental in Newark will feel like a relaxed cruise.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Newark?
Expect solid infrastructure. Most private parks like Whispering Winds Campground in Newark and Cheerful Valley in Phelps offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer at the site), free Wi-Fi near the office, a dump station, hot showers, and laundry. New York State Parks such as Cayuga Lake and Sampson typically offer electric-only sites with a central potable water fill and a dump station near the exit. Free dump and water are also available seasonally at the Newark Erie Canal docks at T. Spencer Knight Park for boaters and travelers passing through. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving any state park, the next fill can be 30+ miles away.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's inside a typical RV rental from Newark hosts?
You'll be comfortable. A typical motorhome rental in Newark sleeps 4-7 with a queen bed, convertible dinette, and over-cab or bunk options. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, and cookware; a wet or dry bath with toilet and shower; furnace and roof-mount air conditioning; a TV/DVD; and seatbelts for every passenger required to be seated while moving. Many Wayne County hosts include outdoor chairs, a hose, leveling blocks, and a starter kit of paper goods. Generators and solar are common on Class B and Class C rigs. Check the listing's amenities section to confirm what's included on your specific booking.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for an RV rental in Newark include linen and kitchen kits ($50-$100), generator use (often $3-$5/hour above an included allotment), bike racks, camp chairs, portable grills, and outdoor mats. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Newark, Lyons, Palmyra, or Macedon, with a 60-90 minute walkthrough included. Many hosts offer delivery within 25-50 miles for a per-mile fee, and some allow late returns by arrangement. Mileage policies vary by listing (commonly 100-150 free miles/day, with unlimited mileage available on some rigs), so review the listing details before you book.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/osss/truck/oversizeHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card, so there is no cash or e-transfer to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class) and released after a clean return with no damage or extra mileage charges. To avoid surprises: take date-stamped photos of the rig at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the same fuel and propane level, and stay under your mileage cap or pre-purchase extra miles. Then your Newark RV trip ends as smoothly as it started.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Newark, NY?
You're sitting in the sweet spot of upstate New York. Top RV road trip routes from Newark include Niagara Falls (about 2 hours west via I-90), Watkins Glen and Seneca Lake wineries (1 hour 15 minutes south), Letchworth State Park, the Grand Canyon of the East (about 1.5 hours southwest), the 1000 Islands along the St. Lawrence (around 2.5 hours northeast), and the Adirondacks at Old Forge (roughly 3 hours east). For a shorter loop, follow the Erie Canalway Trail through Palmyra, Lyons, and Seneca Falls. Pro tip: pair Letchworth with Stony Brook State Park for a waterfall-packed long weekend that's hard to beat.
