Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, QC

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine?

Good news: an RV rental in Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine is one of the most affordable ways to experience this remote archipelago, especially compared to flying in and booking scarce hotel rooms. On RVezy, expect roughly $150 to $250 CAD per night for travel trailers and campervans, and $200 to $400 CAD per night for Class C motorhomes during the peak July and August window. Shoulder season (June and September) prices often drop 20 to 30 percent. Pro tip: book at least four to six months ahead, because the islands have a small local fleet and inventory disappears fast once the CTMA ferry schedule opens. Filter by Instant Book to lock in your dates the moment you find the right rig.

What license do I need to rent an RV in the Magdalen Islands?

Great news for first-time renters: your regular Class 5 driver's license (or its equivalent from any Canadian province, US state, or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine. No special RV endorsement, motorhome permit, or commercial license is required for any rig you'll find on RVezy here, including larger Class C motorhomes. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform in just a few minutes. Visiting from outside Canada? An International Driving Permit paired with your home license keeps things simple at pickup. Most guests are surprised how straightforward it is.

Can I bring my dog on an RV rental in Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine?

Yes, and the islands are a dream for dogs. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine options, and you can find them instantly by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. The archipelago has roughly 300 kilometres of nearly empty beach, including dog-welcoming stretches like Plage de la Dune du Nord and Plage de l'Ouest, where leashed pups can run on packed sand for hours. Camping Le Barachois and Parc de Gros-Cap also welcome well-behaved dogs. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet cleaning add-on and let them know your dog's size. Bring a long lead, fresh water, and a towel: those red-sand paws will thank you.

Can the RV be delivered to the ferry terminal or my campsite?

Yes, RV delivery Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine is one of the smartest ways to skip the stress of shipping your own rig on the CTMA ferry from Souris, PEI. Many local hosts will meet you at the Cap-aux-Meules ferry terminal or deliver the motorhome straight to your campground, whether that's Parc de Gros-Cap in L'Étang-du-Nord or Camping Le Barachois in Bassin. They'll handle setup, hookups, and a full walkthrough so you step in ready to roll. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to find hosts offering this service. Pro tip: many delivery hosts also stock the RV with linens and basics, turning your arrival into a true vacation moment.

How far can I drive across Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine?

Here is a fun fact that makes this destination unique: the entire drivable archipelago is only about 85 kilometres tip to tip, connected by Route 199 and a series of stunning sand dune causeways. That means even with a modest mileage allowance, you will have plenty of room to explore from Havre-Aubert in the south to Grande-Entrée in the northeast. Many RVezy hosts offer generous daily kilometre limits, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal here since you will likely loop the same scenic routes daily. Pro tip: filter listings by mileage policy and ask the host about Île d'Entrée day trips if you plan to add the smaller passenger ferry to your itinerary.

Where are the best campgrounds for RV camping Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine?

You're spoiled for choice, and the best campgrounds near Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine put you right on the water. Parc de Gros-Cap in L'Étang-du-Nord offers cliffside sites with full hookups and kayak rentals next door. Camping Le Barachois in Bassin is a quieter, family-run spot tucked behind a lagoon. Camping des Sillons in Havre-aux-Maisons sits on a dune ridge between two beaches, perfect for sunset walkers. Camping Belle Plage in Fatima rounds out the list with oceanfront sites near Cap-aux-Meules. Pro tip: reserve by February or March for July and August stays: the islands have limited RV sites and Quebec vacationers book early.

When is the best time of year to rent an RV in the Magdalen Islands?

The sweet spot for a Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine RV trip is mid-June through mid-September, when daytime highs sit between 18 and 23°C and the Gulf of St. Lawrence warms up to a swimmable 18 to 20°C, which is genuinely warmer than most Atlantic Canada beaches. July and August are peak with festivals like Contes en Îles and the Concours de Châteaux de Sable sand-castle competition. September is the local insider's pick: fewer crowds, lobster rolls still on every menu, and golden light on the red cliffs. Outside this window, the CTMA ferry runs a reduced schedule and most campgrounds close, so plan your booking between June and September.

I've never driven an RV before. Is the Magdalen Islands a good place to start?

Honestly, yes: it's one of the friendliest places in Canada for first time renting an RV. Route 199 is a single, mostly flat two-lane road with light traffic, low speed limits (typically 70 to 90 km/h), and zero highway merging stress. Your RVezy host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, slide-outs, and dump procedures, and you can message them anytime during your trip. Pro tip: choose a Class B campervan or small Class C for your first rent an RV in Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine experience. They're easy to maneuver on narrow village roads in Havre-Aubert and fit comfortably on ferry decks if you're traveling with the rig.
tc.gc.ca/en/services/road.html

What if I break down in Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine? Is roadside help available?

You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so whether you have a flat near the Dune du Sud or a dead battery in the Cap-aux-Meules harbour parking lot, one phone call gets help dispatched. Local towing partners operate across the archipelago, and because the islands are small, response times are often quicker than on the mainland. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions like where the spare tire is stored. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number to your phone before you board the ferry, since cell coverage is reliable on the islands but you will want it handy.

Can I take the RV off the islands or onto a road trip from Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine?

Yes, with one important detail: the only way on and off the archipelago is the CTMA ferry from Cap-aux-Meules to Souris, Prince Edward Island (a 5-hour crossing). Many hosts allow you to take the RV across for a true RV road trip from Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine through Atlantic Canada, but you'll need to message them before booking to confirm and reserve your vehicle space on the ferry well in advance. Travel within Canada is generally allowed; travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. From Souris, popular routes include PEI's Points East Coastal Drive (2 hours), Cape Breton's Cabot Trail (6 hours), and Halifax (7 hours).

What should I budget for fuel during my Magdalen Islands RV trip?

Here's the good news: because the entire archipelago is only 85 km long, fuel costs for an RV rental Quebec trip out here are remarkably low. Most Class C motorhomes get 18 to 22 litres per 100 km, and campervans get 12 to 15 L/100km. Expect to spend $60 to $120 CAD on gas for a full week of island exploration. Gas prices on Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine typically run 10 to 20 cents per litre higher than the Quebec mainland due to shipping, so fill up smart. Pro tip: the main fuel stations are in Cap-aux-Meules and L'Étang-du-Nord. Top up before heading to Grande-Entrée or Havre-Aubert, where stations are fewer.
rncan.gc.ca/energy/fuel-prices/4593

How far in advance should I book a campground in the Magdalen Islands?

Book early: campground spots here go faster than almost anywhere else in Quebec. For July and August stays, reserve by February or March through each campground's direct website or phone line. Parc de Gros-Cap, Camping Le Barachois, Camping des Sillons, and Camping Belle Plage all take reservations starting in winter. Quebec's SEPAQ system doesn't operate campgrounds on the islands, so you'll book directly with each private operator. Pro tip: if you're flexible, target the last two weeks of June or the first three weeks of September. You'll find availability, lower rates, and the same gorgeous beaches without the peak-season buzz. Pair this with a cheap RV rental Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine in shoulder season for serious savings.
tourismeilesdelamadeleine.com/en/

What are the driving conditions like on the islands?

Driving here is refreshingly relaxed. Route 199 is the spine of the archipelago, a paved two-lane road with gentle hills, ocean views, and very little traffic compared to anywhere else you'd take a motorhome rental Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine. The unique consideration is wind: the islands sit in the open Gulf of St. Lawrence, and gusts on the dune causeways between islands can be strong, especially on tall Class A and Class C rigs. Drive these sections slowly and skip them in severe wind warnings. Fog occasionally rolls in during early summer mornings. Pro tip: check Environment Canada's marine wind forecast each morning. It's surprisingly accurate and helps you plan dune-causeway crossings for calmer hours.
quebec511.info/en/default.aspx

What hookups and dump stations are available at island campgrounds?

You'll find solid amenities at every major campground. Parc de Gros-Cap, Camping Le Barachois, Camping des Sillons, and Camping Belle Plage all offer sites with 30-amp electrical, potable water fills, and on-site dump stations. Most have a mix of full-hookup (water, electric, sewer) and partial-hookup sites, plus showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi at the main lodge. The islands' drinking water comes from protected aquifers and is excellent for filling your fresh tank. Pro tip: book a full-hookup site if you're staying more than two nights. The convenience of on-site sewer is worth it, and dump stations can get busy on Saturday and Sunday turnover days when everyone is rotating in and out.
environnement.gouv.qc.ca/eau/potable/index-en.htm

What's typically included inside an RV rental on the islands?

Most RVs on the platform come stocked and ready for island life. Expect a fully equipped kitchen (stove, fridge, microwave, cookware, plates), a bathroom with shower and toilet, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig, a furnace and air conditioner, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts in this campervan rental Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine market include outdoor chairs, a barbecue, and beach gear since the islands beg for sandy-toe living. Wi-Fi hotspots are common but optional. Generators are standard on Class C motorhomes for off-grid nights. Pro tip: message the host to confirm bedding and towels are included. Many do for free, and it saves precious ferry-bag space.
tourismeilesdelamadeleine.com/en/

What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?

You've got great flexibility. Popular add-ons from hosts on the islands include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, beach chairs and umbrellas, fishing gear, bike racks, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Many hosts also offer ferry-terminal pickup at Cap-aux-Meules so you can arrive as a foot passenger and walk straight into your motorhome (a huge ferry cost saver). Mileage policies vary by listing: some include 200 km per day, others offer unlimited. Pro tip: if you're flying into the small Îles-de-la-Madeleine airport (YGR) in Havre-aux-Maisons, ask your host about airport pickup. Many will meet you there with the keys, turning your trip into a true door-to-door island vacation.

How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?

Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy: no cash, e-transfers, or off-platform deals, which keeps your protection plan valid. You pay your rental total securely by credit card when you book, and the host receives funds after your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, separate from your booking payment. The amount varies by RV but typically ranges from $500 to $1,500 CAD, and it is released after the host confirms the rig was returned clean and undamaged. Pro tip: at pickup, take a quick video walkaround with your host so any pre-existing scuffs are documented. It is the easiest way to ensure a smooth deposit return after your Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine adventure.
