Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the calmest conditions in Howe Sound for boating and paddling across to Gambier Island. July and August are peak season for the small campsite and anchorage, so midweek visits help avoid crowds. May, June, and September are pleasant shoulder months with quieter waters, cooler nights, and good conditions for the Mount Artaban hike. Winter trips are possible but bring strong southerly winds, rain, and short daylight, so most RV travellers visit in the summer season.

Mount Artaban is a moderately strenuous day hike from Halkett Bay to a 360 degree summit viewpoint. The route is a roughly 10 km, six hour day hike through Georgia Strait lowland forest with an elevation gain of 610 metres. From the top, hikers can see Black Mountain, Deeks Peak, the Tantalus and Garibaldi Ranges, Bowen Island, and the San Juan Islands, along with the remnants of an old forest service lookout. bcparks.ca/halkett-bay-marine-park/
Halkett Point is a rare shallow-water glass sponge reef site open to recreational divers. The reef sits in only 30 metres of water, making the park one of the few locations in the world where these reefs are accessible to both scientists and scuba divers. There are scuba diving and snorkelling opportunities at the park but there are no developed dive facilities. bcparks.ca/halkett-bay-marine-park/
The sunken HMCS Annapolis is a purpose-built artificial reef inside the park. The Annapolis artificial reef in the park not only provides habitat opportunities for marine life but also serves as a unique scuba diving opportunity. It is best explored with a local Howe Sound dive charter. bcparks.ca/halkett-bay-marine-park/
Halkett Bay offers simple marine backcountry camping for kayakers and boaters. Marine backcountry camping is allowed, with three developed boat access only walk-in campsites with picnic tables and one pit toilet, and the sites are open year-round. No campfires are permitted anywhere within the park and no camping is allowed on islands. bcparks.ca/halkett-bay-park/
Halkett Bay is a popular protected anchorage in Howe Sound. Good anchorage is available without stern ties, the bay is open to the south, and a number of rocks protrude above the water in the middle of the bay. Chief marine hazards are a series of unmarked drying rocks and reefs in the bay's northwest corner and an unmarked rock near the head, so the favoured approach is to the steep eastern shoreline. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/halkett_bay/
Paddling across from the mainland is a popular way to reach Halkett Bay. Kayak rentals are available in Vancouver. Experienced paddlers commonly launch from Porteau Cove, Sunset Beach, or Lions Bay and cross to Gambier Island in calm conditions. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/halkett_bay/
The small beach at Halkett Bay is a quiet spot for a dip and shoreline exploration. There is cold water ocean swimming at this park, the beach area is pebbles and cobbles, and there are no lifeguards on duty at provincial parks. bcparks.ca/halkett-bay-marine-park/
Halkett Bay is an accessible spot for Howe Sound wildlife watching by boat or on foot. Bald eagle, western red-backed salamander, northern flying squirrel, black-tailed deer, marten, mink, raccoon, seals, and waterfowl can all be found in the park. bcparks.ca/halkett-bay-marine-park/

Halkett Bay Marine Provincial Park, BC, Canada
There is no direct road access to Halkett Bay, so RV travellers drive to the Howe Sound shoreline and continue by boat. The park sits on the southeastern shore of Gambier Island, 15 km from Horseshoe Bay and about 40 km from marinas in Vancouver, and 10 km from Lions Bay. From Vancouver, Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver is roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive via Highway 1, and Porteau Cove is about an hour north on the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99), which has steep grades and winding curves that demand caution in a larger RV. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips.
