Best time to visit Sucia Island Marine State Park

Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the calmest waters for the crossing from Orcas Island or the mainland. July and August bring peak boat traffic, so buoys and dock space fill quickly on weekends. Shoulder months of May, early June, and September are excellent for RVers staging on the mainland, with fewer crowds and still-mild temperatures. Winter visits are possible but wind, rain, and rough seas can make the crossing unsafe.

How to get to Sucia Island Marine State Park

Sucia Island has no road or ferry access, so RV travelers drive to a mainland launch point and cross by private boat or charter. Bellingham is roughly 25 miles southeast and offers the closest marinas and boat launches, while Anacortes, about 80 miles north of Seattle, is the gateway for Washington State Ferries to Orcas Island, where additional charters depart. Interstate 5 is the main RV route with no tunnels or extreme grades, but Highway 20 into Anacortes has weight-restricted bridges that large rigs should verify in advance. Bellingham International Airport and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport are the nearest airports for fly-and-rent travelers.
