Campgrounds and RV parks near South Dundas, ON

The St. Lawrence River is the main draw. Boating, fishing, swimming, and paddling are the core activities from Morrisburg east through the sanctuary lands. Coles Creek State Park sits on Lake St. Lawrence with a marina at the mouth of Coles Creek just north of the park entrance, and the Waterfront Trail runs the length of the corridor and is popular with cyclists. Birding and wildlife viewing are strong shoulder-season draws. The Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary features 69 campsites and five group camping areas, a Visitor Interpretive Centre, roughly 8 to 9 kilometres of self-guided nature trails, and habitat for well over 150 bird species. History anchors the rest of the itinerary. Upper Canada Village and the Crysler Farm Battlefield Park are nearby, and at certain times of year visitors can see a reenactment of the War of 1812 battle that took place there in November 1813.

The camping season on both sides of the river is short and clearly defined. The Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary campground and the other St. Lawrence Parks properties operate roughly from May through October. Cardinal / Ottawa South KOA Holiday runs a similar window, opening in early May and closing in mid-October, and Coles Creek State Park Campground operates seasonally from mid-May through early September. July and August are peak. Waterfront sites and full-hookup pads fill quickly on long weekends, including Canada Day, the August civic holiday, and US Labor Day. Booking well ahead is advisable for these dates. Shoulder seasons offer real advantages. Spring brings migrating waterfowl to the sanctuary, which was originally established as a re-establishment site for Canada geese and still hosts large numbers of ducks and geese during spring and fall migrations. Fall delivers cool nights, colour along the river, and thinner crowds. Winter camping is not offered at the riverfront parks.

Expect flat, open river-terrace terrain with a mix of shaded and exposed sites. Coles Creek offers wooded and open campsites near a swimming beach on Lake St. Lawrence, with dumping stations, showers, boat rentals, and a playground on site. The Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary campground includes RV sites with water and 30- or 50-amp electricity, unserviced sites, premium waterfront sites without services, and group camping areas. Families will find the Cardinal KOA the most amenity-heavy option, with a pool, splash pad, pirate ship playground, big bouncer, and mini putt, plus themed activities on summer weekends. Mosquitoes and blackflies can be heavy near wetland areas in early summer, and cell coverage in rural pockets is limited. Bring bug spray and expect variable Wi-Fi.
