Old Québec is the anchor attraction: a UNESCO World Heritage district with the Château Frontenac, ramparts, and the Lower Town reached by the Funiculaire. Parc de la Chute-Montmorency, about 15 minutes from downtown, features a waterfall taller than Niagara, a cable car, a suspended footbridge across the brink, a panoramic staircase, and a zipline over the plunge pool. Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier sits roughly 30 to 50 kilometres north and offers hiking, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, and rafting on the Jacques-Cartier River, plus moose, deer, and black bear habitat. Île d'Orléans, reached by bridge from the north shore, is a loop drive of farms, cideries, and sugar shacks. Canyon Sainte-Anne adds suspended bridges and a zipline farther east along the coast.

Most private campgrounds around Québec City run from mid-May to early or mid-October. July and August are the busiest weeks of the year, particularly the last two weeks of July when Quebecers take their construction holiday, and sites fill well in advance. Daytime highs in summer sit around 24°C, with humidity that can push the felt temperature higher. Late September and early October bring fall foliage across the Laurentians and Île d'Orléans, cooler nights, and lower campground occupancy. Frost normally returns to the area in early October, so plan for cold nights if travelling late in the shoulder. November is a transitional month when many private parks close, but Sépaq keeps select sites open. Winter, from December into March, is genuinely cold. From November to April, Québec City can remain below freezing all day long, with about 89 days a year when the temperature never rises above 0°C. Sites near the city are urban or semi-urban. Camping Municipal De Beauport, for example, is an organized municipal park with hookups, laundry, and easy highway access, not a wilderness setting. Expect French as the primary language at reception, though most staff handle English bookings without issue. Quiet hours typically run from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m., and Sépaq enforces this curfew along with limits on generator use. Campfires are allowed only in designated rings and can be banned outright when SOPFEU posts an extreme fire-danger index. Do not bring firewood across regions: buy it on-site or from a local producer to limit the spread of invasive insects. Mosquitoes and black flies are heaviest from late May into early July, especially inside the parks north of the city.
