Folsom Lake is the main draw. The reservoir covers roughly 11,000 surface acres for water skiing, jet skiing, sailing, cruising, and fishing, with anglers targeting trout, catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass. The recreation area has about ninety-five miles of trails for bicyclists, runners, horseback riders, and hikers, and a paved bike trail connects Beals Point to the American River Bike Trail that runs all the way into Sacramento. Day trips up Highway 49 reach Auburn State Recreation Area for whitewater rafting on the American River and Old Town Auburn for gold-rush history. Loomis itself has a small historic downtown, farm stands along Taylor Road, and easy access to wineries in the Placer foothills.

Loomis has a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and cool wet winters. Summer is the long peak season for the lake: water temperatures are warm, the foothills stay rain-free for months, and afternoon highs routinely climb into the 90s Fahrenheit. RVs with strong air conditioning have a clear advantage, and shaded sites fill earliest. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for touring. March through May brings green hills, wildflowers, and the highest lake levels of the year as Sierra snowmelt fills the reservoir. October cools off without much rain and tends to be uncrowded. Winter is the wet season. December is the wettest month, averaging around six inches of rain over roughly 13 rainy days. Storms come and go rather than settling in for weeks, so winter camping is workable, but expect short days and saturated ground. A practical lake-side note for trip planning: the boat launch ramps at Peninsula become unusable when the lake drops below 431 feet in elevation, which typically happens in late June to early July but varies year to year.

Folsom Lake's developed campgrounds are well-equipped but not luxurious. Beals Point has piped drinking water, restrooms with flush toilets and showers, a dump station, and 69 family campsites that fit tents, trailers, and motor homes up to 31 feet, with full hookups in the RV loop at sites 50 to 69. Peninsula is the more remote of the two, reached by a narrow winding road off Highway 49 that keeps crowds down but rewards careful driving. Expect oak-shaded terrain, summer dust, and rolling hills rather than flat pads. Cell coverage is generally usable on the west and south sides of the lake and spottier at Peninsula. Pets are allowed on leash at the state-park campgrounds.
