Campgrounds and RV parks near Staunton, VA

The Frontier Culture Museum is an outdoor living history museum in Staunton with re-created farms showing early West African, English, Irish, German, and American settlements. Families can also visit the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum and catch a performance at the American Shakespeare Center's Blackfriars Playhouse, a re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. Outdoors, Staunton sits a short drive west of Rockfish Gap, where Skyline Drive meets the northern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hikers head into Shenandoah National Park for waterfalls and overlooks, or west into the George Washington National Forest for Todd Lake, North River Gorge, and the Wild Oak National Recreation Trail. Anglers fish stocked mountain streams, and cyclists ride gravel roads out of the Stokesville area, one of the region's best-known mountain-biking hubs.

Peak camping season runs late spring through October. Shenandoah National Park campgrounds typically open between late March and early May and close by late October or early November, weather permitting, and Skyline Drive may close temporarily for inclement weather. Fall foliage weekends in October are the busiest of the year and book out months ahead. In the surrounding national forest, higher-elevation campgrounds run a shorter season. Todd Lake Recreation Area operates from mid-May to late October and is not suitable for large RVs, while North River Campground is open early March to late December on a first-come, first-served basis. Private parks along I-81, including Shenandoah Valley Campground and Walnut Hills Campground and RV Park, generally stay open longer and often run year-round with limited winter services. Spring brings wildflowers and reliable stream flows but also some of the wettest weeks of the year. Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms. Winter camping is possible in the valley, but mountain roads and high-elevation sites are frequently closed.

Private parks along the I-81 corridor near Staunton generally offer full hookups, dump stations, showers, and pull-through sites that handle larger rigs. Amenities like pools, playgrounds, and camp stores are common at Shenandoah Valley Campground, Walnut Hills Campground and RV Park, and Sun Retreats Shenandoah Valley. National park and national forest campgrounds are more primitive. At Big Meadows there are no RV hookups, a dump and fill station with potable water is available, and generators are allowed only between 8 to 10 in the morning and 4 to 7 in the evening. Forest Service sites in the mountains west of Staunton are best suited to smaller RVs and vans, with narrow access roads and no hookups. Black bears are common throughout the region, so food must be stored in vehicles or bear lockers. Cell service is spotty once campers leave the valley floor, and it is worth downloading maps before heading into the forest.
