Activity from a Mission Viejo base centers on the coast. Surfing, swimming, and tide pooling are the headline draws at Doheny State Beach, which has a visitor center, picnic areas with barbecue grills, and lifeguards on patrol. Crystal Cove State Park adds tide pools, sandy coves, rocky reefs, ridges and canyons, plus a federally listed Historic District of vintage coastal cottages and roughly 2,400 acres of backcountry hiking in Moro Canyon. San Clemente State Beach offers bluff-top trails down to surf breaks at T Street and Calafia.
