Camping near Somerset, New Jersey
Somerset sits in central New Jersey's Somerset County, roughly midway between New York City and Philadelphia. RV travelers use it as a base for reaching the Jersey Shore, the Pine Barrens, and the amusement corridor around Jackson and Freehold. The closest developed RV camping is not in Somerset itself but a short drive south and east, in Monmouth and Ocean county pine forests.
Options in the area range from public parkland to private resorts. Turkey Swamp Park, a Monmouth County park in Freehold Township, offers wooded, pull-through sites with electric and water hookups. Timberland Lake Campground and Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground sit in Jackson, close to Six Flags Great Adventure. Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort in Cream Ridge offers RV Ultra Sites and luxury cabins. Pine Cone Campgrounds is another private option in the area.
Most of these campgrounds are seasonal, opening in spring and closing in mid to late fall. Reservations are handled directly by each park or through its own online system.
Things to do near Somerset
Six Flags Great Adventure, Hurricane Harbor, and Wild Safari in Jackson are the dominant family draw and sit within a short drive of Timberland Lake Campground and Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort. The Jersey Shore boardwalks at Point Pleasant and Seaside Heights, along with Sandy Hook, are reachable as day trips.
On the natural side, Turkey Swamp Park contains a 17-acre lake for fishing and paddling, plus multi-use trails through pitch pine and oak woodland typical of the northern edge of the Pine Barrens. Allaire State Park offers hiking and a preserved historic village. Round Valley and Spruce Run Recreation Areas to the west add reservoir swimming and boating.
New York City and Philadelphia are both within roughly an hour by car, making urban day trips feasible from a Somerset-area base.

Most private and county campgrounds in this part of New Jersey run a spring to fall season. Turkey Swamp Park's family campground opens April 1 and closes November 15, and reservations for the upcoming season are accepted starting January 1. Private resorts follow a similar pattern, with peak activity from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Summer is the busiest window. Weekends near Six Flags, holiday weekends, and any date tied to shore traffic fill early. Turkey Swamp Park requires a two-night minimum on Friday through Sunday stays and a three-night minimum on holiday weekends. Cabin stays at the park carry a two-night minimum throughout the week.
Spring and fall bring cooler nights and lighter crowds, though some site amenities run on a shortened window, roughly mid-April through mid-November. Winter camping is very limited in the immediate area, since most private grounds close entirely and the Monmouth County family campground is shuttered until April.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book a site
Turkey Swamp Park takes reservations through the Monmouth County Park System online booking page or by calling the campground office after noon. Of its 64 wooded pull-through sites, 52 are reservable and 12 are held first come, first served, and full payment is required at booking.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort books through its own website and manages individually owned rental units. Timberland Lake Campground, Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground, and Pine Cone Campgrounds accept bookings by phone and through their websites.
For summer weekends and any date near Six Flags events, book several months out. Weekday and shoulder-season sites are easier to secure on shorter notice.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this region are typically wooded, level, and cut into pitch pine and oak forest. Turkey Swamp Park offers pull-through sites with water and electric, modern restrooms with hot showers, a laundry, a self-serve dump station, and fire rings. Timberland Lake Campground has water, electric, and cable at all sites, with full-hookup and 50-amp options, an on-site store, propane, a free dump station, and a pump-out service.
Amenities skew family oriented. Expect swimming pools, playgrounds, small lakes with rental boats, mini golf, and scheduled weekend activities from spring through early fall. Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort positions itself as a higher-end product with larger sites and cabins, and has more restrictive on-site rules than a typical public campground.
Come prepared for ticks in wooded areas and mosquitoes near lakes and swamps in high summer.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Somerset%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Somerset, NJ?
Good news for first-time renters: New Jersey does not require a special license or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to drive a personal-use RV under 26,000 pounds, which covers nearly every rental on RVezy. Your regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Somerset. All RVezy guests must generally be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and identity is verified securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association along with your home license. Most renters are surprised by how straightforward the process really is: you book, verify, and you're set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my Somerset, NJ RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every RVezy booking in Somerset includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. RVezy offers multiple tiers so you can pick the protection that fits your trip and budget. Review the coverage options carefully at checkout so you know exactly what's included before you head out for your Somerset RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Somerset, NJ RV trip?
You're covered. RVezy, not the host, sets cancellation policies, so the rules are consistent no matter which Somerset host you book with. Every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you reserve, giving you breathing room if your plans shift. After that window, refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel. Booking your Somerset RV trip is genuinely low-risk. Book early to lock in the best rigs for peak summer dates, then use that grace period to finalize your route through the Delaware Water Gap or the Jersey Shore with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Somerset, NJ?
Yes. Many RVezy hosts in Somerset offer pet-friendly RV rentals: just use the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you'll see rigs that welcome dogs and sometimes cats. Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is clearly listed on the booking page. Once you're on the road, Duke Farms in nearby Hillsborough is a great leashed-dog walking spot about 10 minutes from Somerset, and Colonial Park in Franklin Township has a fenced off-leash dog park. Message the host before booking to mention your pet's size and breed, it speeds approval and helps them prep the RV.
dukefarms.org/visit/visitor-information/Can the RV be delivered to me in Somerset, NJ?
Yes, RV delivery in Somerset is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip towing or driving a big rig through Central Jersey traffic. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your RV at a campground like Cheesequake State Park, Spruce Run Recreation Area, or even your private driveway. They'll level the rig, connect hookups, and walk you through every system before leaving. Delivery fees are typically based on distance from the host's location. Filter by Delivery when searching, and look for hosts who deliver to your specific campground. It's the easiest way to enjoy a stress-free Somerset RV trip.

You've got incredible range from Somerset's central location near I-287, I-78, and the New Jersey Turnpike. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and many offer generous daily allowances or RV rental with unlimited mileage packages, perfect for longer road trips. From Somerset, you can reach the Jersey Shore (Seaside Heights) in about 75 minutes, the Delaware Water Gap in about 90 minutes, the Poconos in roughly 2 hours, Cape May in around 2.5 hours, and Acadia National Park in about 8 to 9 hours. Check the mileage policy on each listing before booking, and message the host if you're planning a longer haul, many will adjust the allotment for an extra fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Somerset%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Somerset, NJ?
You're surrounded by excellent campgrounds within an hour of Somerset. Cheesequake State Park in Matawan (about 30 minutes east) offers wooded RV-friendly sites near the shore. Spruce Run Recreation Area in Clinton (about 40 minutes west) is a favorite for lakeside RV camping. Round Valley Recreation Area, also near Clinton, has reservoir views and large sites. Voorhees State Park in Glen Gardner is a quieter, family-friendly pick. For full hookups, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City (with Manhattan skyline views) is a popular option. Reserve New Jersey state park sites through ReserveAmerica well in advance, summer weekends can fill quickly once booking opens.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Somerset, NJ?
Late April through late October is prime time for a Somerset RV trip, with three sweet spots depending on your style. May and June bring lush green landscapes and daytime highs in the 65 to 80°F range, ideal for the Delaware Water Gap. July and August are peak beach season, with temperatures from 75 to 88°F, perfect for the Jersey Shore but busiest at campgrounds. September and October are a local insider favorite: crisp air in the 55 to 75°F range and stunning fall foliage across the Sourland Mountains and northwestern NJ. Book a late-September trip to combine warm days, cool nights, and far fewer crowds at state park campgrounds.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving in New Jersey?
You'll do great, and you won't be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, the generator, slides, and water systems before you leave. If first time renting an RV feels intimidating, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or a campervan rental in Somerset, both are easy to handle on local roads like Route 22 and I-287. Avoid rush hour around Newark and the George Washington Bridge, and use an RV-specific GPS to dodge restricted parkway sections (the Garden State Parkway has trailer and large RV restrictions). Book delivery for your first trip and you'll skip the driving stress entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I have a breakdown or problem on the road?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and towing. If something goes wrong on the New Jersey Turnpike or out near High Point State Park, one phone call gets help dispatched to your location. Your host is also typically just a message away for quick questions about the rig's quirks, and the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after every trip. Save the roadside assistance number and your host's contact in your phone before you pull out of Somerset, it takes 30 seconds and gives huge peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Somerset RV rental across state lines or to Canada?
Yes, crossing state lines is one of the joys of an RV road trip from Somerset. New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Connecticut are all easy day-drives, and your RVezy protection plan travels with you across U.S. state lines. Heading to Canada (think Niagara Falls or Montreal)? Many hosts allow it, but you'll need to message the host before booking to confirm, since arrangements vary by listing. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Bring your passport for any Canadian crossing, and ask the host for the vehicle registration and a cross-border letter of authorization, both speed up your border experience considerably.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Somerset, NJ RV trip?
Easier than you'd think to plan. New Jersey gas prices recently average in the $3.00 to $3.50 per gallon range, and the state still has full-service pumps, no self-serve required. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), campervans achieve 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG while towing). For a 3-night trip to the Jersey Shore and back (about 200 miles round-trip), budget roughly $70 to $90 in fuel for a Class C. Fuel up just off I-287 in Somerset before departure, prices there often beat what you'll pay along the Garden State Parkway or near the shore.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground from Somerset, NJ?
For New Jersey state parks like Spruce Run, Cheesequake, or Round Valley, book the moment your dates open through the state's ReserveAmerica system, summer weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day routinely fill quickly. For private parks and KOA locations in the Poconos, 2 to 3 months ahead is usually safe. Shoulder-season trips (May or September) often have great availability even 2 weeks out. If your first-choice park is full, check ReserveAmerica midweek for cancellations, which often open up 7 to 14 days before busy weekends.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What's driving like around Somerset, NJ in an RV?
Somerset sits in a sweet spot for RV drivers: easy highway access via I-287, I-78, and Route 22, with mostly flat-to-rolling terrain. The main thing to know is that trailers and many large RVs are restricted on the Garden State Parkway, so use the New Jersey Turnpike or I-287 for north-south travel instead. Avoid rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.) near Newark, Edison, and the George Washington Bridge, and watch for low clearances on older parkway bridges. Download an RV-specific GPS app like RV Life or CoPilot, it routes you around parkway restrictions automatically and saves real headaches.
nj.gov/turnpike/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Somerset, NJ?
Campgrounds near Somerset range from rustic state park sites to full-hookup private resorts, so you can pick what fits your trip. New Jersey state parks like Spruce Run and Round Valley typically offer water and electric (no sewer at most sites), modern restrooms, hot showers, and dump stations on-site. Private parks like Camp Taylor in Columbia offer full hookups (water, electric 30/50 amp, and sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Dump stations are also available at many campgrounds along I-78 and at Cheesequake State Park. Fill your freshwater tank before leaving the Somerset area, and ask your host for the location of the nearest dump station to your campground, it saves time on departure day.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/camping.htmlWhat's actually inside the RV I'm renting in Somerset?
More creature comforts than you'd expect. Most RVezy rentals in Somerset come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (air conditioning and furnace), and dining/living space that converts to extra sleeping. Class C motorhomes and larger travel trailers typically sleep 4 to 8, with seatbelts for travel, a flat-screen TV, and many include generators for off-grid power. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include mobile hotspots, others rely on campground Wi-Fi. The listing page details exactly what's included. Filter by Sleeps count to match your group size, and message the host about specific gear like outdoor chairs, BBQs, or bedding, many include these as standard.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Somerset%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect with a Somerset RV rental?
Lots of flexibility. RVezy hosts in Somerset commonly offer add-ons like linen and kitchen kits, camp chair and table bundles, portable grills, generators, bike racks, and even tank-emptying services so you can return the RV without dealing with the dump station. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Somerset, Franklin Township, or nearby Bridgewater, and most hosts include a 30 to 60-minute orientation. Standard mileage policies range from 100 to 200 miles per day with options to prepay for more, or look for an RV rental with unlimited mileage if you're planning a long haul. Bundle add-ons when booking, it's usually cheaper than buying them separately and saves a last-minute store run before you hit the road.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Somerset%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host. You'll typically pay a portion at booking and the balance closer to your trip start date. Each host sets a refundable security deposit (commonly $500 to $1,500 for a Somerset RV rental), which is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged unless there's damage, missing items, or unpaid fees like extra mileage. After a clean return, the hold is released within a few business days. Do a quick walk-around video with your host at pickup and drop-off, it documents the RV's condition and makes the deposit release process smooth and fast.
