Campgrounds and RV parks near Yuma, AZ

Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park sits on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River. Ground was broken on April 28, 1876, and the first seven inmates moved in on July 1 of that year. Visitors walk the original strap-iron cells, the solitary dark cell, and the guard tower. The adjacent Colorado River State Historic Park interprets the old U.S. Army Quartermaster Depot that once supplied forts across the Southwest. Outdoor options are strong. Kofa National Wildlife Refuge lies north of town, and Imperial National Wildlife Refuge sits along the Colorado, both offering desert hiking, birding, and backcountry roads. The Imperial Sand Dunes on the California side draw off-highway-vehicle riders in winter, and Martinez Lake provides fishing and boating on the Colorado. In town, historic downtown Yuma has restaurants, the Sanguinetti House Museum, and walking access to Gateway Park on the river.

Winter is the headline season. Daytime highs typically sit in the upper 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit from December through February, and freezing nights are rare. Snowbird parks run full activity calendars during this window, and the city hosts craft shows, farmers markets, and cool-season festivals. Spring stays comfortable through March and April before heat builds sharply in May. This is a good window for hiking in Kofa and for visiting the Imperial Sand Dunes before summer OHV use tapers off. April, May, and October are widely regarded as peak windows for outdoor visitation, when temperatures suit longer time outside. Summers are sweltering and arid, winters are cool and dry, and skies are mostly clear year round. Many private RV resorts reduce services or scale back amenities from roughly June through September, and a brief monsoon pattern can bring dust storms and isolated thunderstorms in July and August. Fall cools quickly after October and marks the start of the snowbird return.

Expect flat, gravel or paved sites at most private parks, with full hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, and Wi-Fi that varies in reliability. Landscaping is desert style with limited shade, so awnings and window covers matter. Big-rig access is generally good on main roads, though some older parks have tight interior lanes. Many parks cater to long-term winter guests and lean quiet, adult, and social, with clubhouses, pools, shuffleboard, and pickleball. Nightly and weekly stays are usually available but sometimes limited during peak season, when monthly and seasonal renters fill most sites. Yuma is a full-service city with major grocery, medical, and RV repair options, and the border town of Los Algodones, Mexico is a short drive south. Expect Border Patrol checkpoints on highways leading out of town, and carry identification when driving in the region.
