Campgrounds and RV parks near Salem, OR

Silver Falls State Park is the headline trip from Salem. The 9,000-acre park is built around the Trail of Ten Falls, a 7.2-mile loop passing ten distinct waterfalls, including the 177-foot South Falls. There are four waterfalls that you are able to walk behind. South Falls is the famous one, though Lower South, North and Middle North all have an amphitheater that provides enough room for a trail. Closer to town, Willamette Mission State Park covers grassy meadows and oxbow lake habitat along the Willamette River, with miles of multi-use trails for hiking and horseback riding. The nation's largest black cottonwood sits on the shores of Mission Lake. This 270-year old tree is more than 28 feet in circumference, and stands more than 155 feet tall. The Willamette River offers kayaking and fishing, and the Wheatland Ferry crossing is a kid-friendly novelty. In Salem itself, the State Capitol grounds, Riverfront Park carousel, and Willamette Heritage Center fill rainy-day gaps.

Summer is the prime RV window in the Salem area. Days are warm and dry, the Willamette Valley sees little rain from late June through early September, and the full range of state-park campgrounds is open. Expect the busiest weekends at Silver Falls and at private parks closest to I-5. Shoulder seasons are a strong second choice. Spring brings thundering waterfalls fed by rain and runoff, while September and October offer manageable crowds, cooler temperatures, and fall color on the maple-lined trail sections. Depending on the first frost, mid-October is usually the peak for Silver Falls State Park's brief-but-spectacular fall color season. Note that reservable facilities at Willamette Mission are closed Oct. 1 through May 14. The park does not have showers. Winter is the wettest, quietest stretch. Winter temperatures at Silver Falls can vary greatly, but winter months often bring either large amounts of rain or sub-freezing temperatures that can result in ice or snow. Due to the park's elevation, extensive tree cover, and ambient moisture, icy conditions are common on the park trails and roads. Private RV parks in town stay open year-round and are the most reliable cold-season option.

Salem-area private RV parks generally provide paved or gravel pads, full hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry, with easy access to I-5 and city services. They suit travelers who want a comfortable base for day trips rather than a wilderness feel. State parks deliver the scenery but come with trade-offs. Willamette Mission has no showers, and at Silver Falls, Loop B is better for larger RVs: 38 back-in sites handle rigs up to 83 feet, versus Loop A maxing at 33 feet. While there are no sewer hookups at most sites, an RV dump station is located at the North Falls Day-Use Area. Cell service inside the park is spotty. The park is within the Marion and Yamhill County permanent quarantine zone for all ash, olive, and white fringe tree materials. These tree materials, including firewood, must stay within the county where they were collected to help slow the spread of the emerald ash borer. Day-use parking permits are required at most state parks and are separate from the campground fee.
