Discover Ottawa

Canada's capital, Ottawa, is a charming road trip destination with world-class festivals, stunning parks, and friendly locals. Whether you chow down on BeaverTails, plan a romantic day out at the world’s largest natural ice rink, or take in vistas across the Ottawa River from Parliament Hill — Ottawa is sure to impress even the fussiest member of your crew. Ottawa is also part of Canada's bilingual belt, so brush up on your French before taking a trip.

The best time to visit Bytown is in the spring when the temperatures are on the rise, and you don’t have to deal with crowds of tourists. Ottawa hosts festivals year-round, and during the spring, you catch the Ottawa International Children's Festival and the Ottawa Marathon. Qu’est-ce que vous attendez? Things to do in Ottawa

Before heading to Ottawa's top attractions, you might be worried about driving your big rig through the Canadian capital. Despite having a population of around 1 million people, Ottawa isn't very congested, and traffic is generally better than it is in other big cities like Toronto and Montreal. Ottawa also has an excellent public transport system and over 170 kilometres (105 miles) of bicycle lanes. The best places to park an RV rental in Ottawa are at the Rideau Carleton Raceway or a nearby Walmart.

You won't want to miss out on visiting the Rideau Canal during your stay in Ottawa. Ontario's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rideau Canal, is the oldest continuously operating canal in North America. During the summer, plan a bike ride along the canal or rent a kayak and take in the sights. In the winter, Rideau Canal is transformed into the world's largest natural ice-skating rink and is a must for any avid ice skater.

Visitors looking to see the best of Ottawa will also want to swing by Parliament Hill. The seat of Canada's government, Parliament Hill, features iconic Gothic Revival architecture and sits atop a hill overlooking the Ottawa River. You can book a tour of the parliament buildings where you'll get to admire beautiful paintings and learn about Canada's history. Several rooms have also been renovated to look as they did in the 19th century.

Itching to get outdoors? Ottawa has some superb parks just minutes from downtown. Walking distance from Parliament Hill, you’ll find Major's Hill Park. Covering 5 hectares (12 acres) along the Rideau Canal, Major's Hill Park is perfect for a quick escape from the busy city streets. The park features several picnic areas and is one of the best places to see the annual tulip bloom. Another great park to check out is Gatineau Park. Just a 10-minute drive across the river in Quebec, Gatineau Park covers over 350 square kilometres of stunning forests and offers some of the best bike paths and hiking trails in Canada.

RV campgrounds in Ottawa

Lush forests surround Ottawa, meaning you won't have any trouble finding somewhere peaceful to park up. One of the best RV parks in Ottawa is Wesley Clover Parks Campground. This campground is also among the most convenient, located just 14 kilometres (8.5 miles) from downtown. Each wooded site comes with water and 20/30/50-amp electrical hookups. Pets are allowed, and amenities around camp include a dump station, free Wi-Fi, and a laundromat. Due to the camp's rural location, it's great for outdoor activities like hiking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing.

Another popular and convenient RV campground in Ottawa is Camp Hither Hills. Like Wesley Clover Parks Campground, Camp Hither Hills is surrounded by woodlands less than 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) from Bytown. Sites come with full hookups and 30- and 50-amp electricity. Camp Hither Hills is pet friendly, and there's an on-site dog park. Amenities include laundry facilities, showers, and a dump station. When you're not exploring Ottawa, spend your days relaxing by the pool or kicking around a ball on the soccer field.

If you'd prefer to stay slightly farther from the Canadian capital, check out Sleepy Cedars Family Camping. This campground is situated about 30 kilometres (18.5 miles) south of the city, deep within Ontario's woodlands. Sites come with full or partial hookups that allow 15- and 30-amp electricity. Pets are welcome and limited to two per family. Sleepy Cedars provides some home comforts, like Wi-Fi, showers, and a dump station. There are also a few things to keep your crew entertained around camp, including a heated pool, a mini-golf course, and a rec hall.
