Discover Jersey City

When people think of Jersey City, camping might not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, RVers know that this Garden State destination has lots to offer outdoor enthusiasts and road trippers alike. With plenty of activities to choose from, the Jersey City area is a great place to plan an RV vacation and offers several scenic campgrounds where you'll want to spend the night.

The best time to visit is during the early summer months when you can enjoy temperatures in the low 80s. Take advantage of the long days and t-shirt weather by getting out and exploring all of the outdoor attractions that this diverse location has to offer. Whether you find yourself spending the day in Liberty State Park or wandering around on Grove Street, a trip to this Northeast city will be one to remember.

As a major urban city, parking is limited in Jersey. For RVers, it's best to park outside of town and get around via the Hudson-Bergen light rail or PATH train system as the locals do. Alternatively, if you're a member of a car share service, you can rent a vehicle to zip around between stops. No matter what neighborhood you're exploring, keep your eyes up to spot the hundreds of beautiful murals scattered throughout the city as part of the Jersey City Mural Arts Program. While strolling around town on foot, make your way down Grove Street, and pop into quaint bookstores and cool shops. Don't forget to stop for a hoagie or a slice of famous Jersey pizza.

Liberty State Park is one of their most well-known attractions, with a fantastic view of the New York City Skyline. Take in Manhattan beauty with a walk along the Hudson River before finding a spot to settle in for a picnic. With over 1,200 acres of green space, anywhere you choose to lay out a blanket will be the perfect spot. The park is also home to Liberty Science Center, an interactive museum where you and your family can spend the day. With 12 galleries and exhibits spanning a variety of topics, you will learn about everything from the history of the Rubik's Cube to microbes. The Science Center is also home to the country's largest planetarium, a feature you surely won't want to miss.

From there, hop on a ferry that takes you to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You'll discover the historical significance of each of these sites while enjoying an afternoon on the water. When visiting the Statue of Liberty, you can choose from tickets that give you entry to the pedestal or the crown of Lady Liberty. The ascent to the crown is a bit of a climb, but the views from the top and the once-in-a-lifetime experience are worth it. History buffs and tourists alike will enjoy finding out more about Ellis Island. As an entry point for more than 12 million immigrants, it is one of the most symbolic places of the American dream. While you're there, browse the arrival records at the Family History Center and maybe you'll learn something about your history too.

Cheesequake State Park is a 40-minute drive from Jersey City and is right off the Garden State Parkway, making it the perfect place to escape the city's hustle and bustle. The park has all of your basic needs covered. Take your crew out to try one of the five designated hiking trails, ranging from easy to difficult, and experience the beauty of Cheesequake's two unique ecosystems. If going fishing is one of the ways you unwind, grab a fishing rod and have a go at freshwater fishing in the lake, or try your hand at crabbing. After a long, exciting day, head down to the beach area and barbecue up some dinner, maybe that trout you caught earlier? Bear in mind that this campsite is best suited to smaller trailers, motorhomes, and pop-up campers as it has an 11' height restriction.

If you're looking to put even more distance between you and the metropolis area, take your Jersey City RV rental for a scenic 80-mile drive down the Christopher Columbus Highway to Delaware River Family Campground. Along with the essential amenities, this riverside campground has an on-site general store, volleyball and basketball courts, a swimming pool, and planned weekend events for the whole family. While the river isn't suitable for swimming, it is a major draw for those who enjoy rafting and boating. Although most shopping and restaurants require a drive into town, there is Marshall's Farm Market down the road, where you can stock up on local groceries.

TipTam Camping Resort in Jackson Township has everything you would hope to have when you're out in the wilderness, and then some. From basic amenities like laundry rooms and showers to outdoor activities such as go-karting tracks, mini-golf, and basketball courts, this campground is a great option for families looking to entertain the kids. RVs of all sizes are welcome. TipTam is a 70-mile drive outside of Jersey, making it a slightly less appealing option if you're looking to make day trips into Jersey City or Manhattan. However, when staying the night at TipTam, you'll be conveniently located close to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, a must-see for the thrill-seekers in your group.
